Trenton Devils News Release

Trenton, NJ - Behind 2-0 after 40 minutes, the Trenton Devils used two third-period goals and three shootout strikes to edge the Elmira Jackals, 3-2, Sunday at Sun National Bank Center.

Ryan Ginand potted Trenton's first marker to extend his team lead in goals (29) and points (70) and Trevor Kell also scored during regulation time, while Ryan Hayes, Matt Lombardi and J.S. Berube were the shootout goal scorers. Jeff Lerg made 33 saves on 35 shots through regulation and overtime and stopped three of Elmira's four shootout attempts to win his second straight start.

Jared DeMichiel was the hard-luck losing goalie and made 49 saves in a game the Jackals were outshot 52-35, while Elmira fell to 29-24-6-3 by losing for just the third time in 10 games.

After a scoreless first period, Eric Regan scored his 10th goal of the season at 2:03 of the second period to give Elmira a 1-0 lead, with Josh Brittain and Michael Dubuc garnering assists. Regan's goal came off a wrist shot from the left point that avoided several bodies in front of the net and beat Lerg just inside the short-side post.

Ahead 1-0, the Jackals got into penalty trouble in the second period and were flagged for five of their eight minors in the middle stanza. However, the Devils couldn't capitalize and have now been held scoreless over their last 28 power-play opportunities.

Following Elmira's final successful penalty kill of the second period, Chris Frank obtained possession right out of the penalty box, came down the left-wing boards and fired past Lerg to give the Jackals a 2-0 lead with Justin Donati potting his league-leading 86th point with one assist, and Regan the secondary helper for his second point of the night.

Ryan Ginand narrowed Elmira's lead to 2-1 by scoring an unassisted goal at 3:23 of the third period. During four-on-four play, Ginand's goal came off a two-on-one chance with Ryan Hayes. Rather than passing to Hayes, Ginand deked around Elmira's defenseman on the right wing and came in alone against DeMichiel, waited, hesitated and then shot and scored his 29th of the season.

Trenton's captain, Trevor Kell, evened the game 2-2 by scoring a slap-shot goal between DeMichiel's legs with 5:30 remaining in the third period. Dan Charleston earned his eighth assist in nine games against Elmira with the primary helper, while Tony Zancanaro also assisted.

After a scoreless overtime, Ryan Hayes put Trenton ahead 1-0 in the first round with his league-leading sixth shootout goal, Lombardi potted his third in the second round, and Berube clinched the win in the fifth round, as Lerg stopped three of four attempts.

With two straight wins under their belt, and now 6-7 against Elmira, the Devils will look for a three-game winning streak when they host Elmira again Wednesday at 7 p.m.
