Taking Charge to Force Seven
The Wheeling Nailers did exactly what they had to on Tuesday night, as they picked up a 5-2 win over the Toledo Walleye at Huntington Center in game six of the Best-of-Seven North Division Semi-Final Series. The Nailers had a pair of crazy scenarios go their way, including the first goal of the night, in which Zack Torquato capitalized on Jeff Lerg slipping back into his crease. Wheeling used special teams to its advantage in the middle frame, as Riley Brace netted a shorthanded goal, while Sahir Gill found the twine on the man advantage. Both teams scored twice in the third period, with the two Nailers goals going to Torquato, who completed his hat trick. Eric Hartzell made 28 saves, while dishing out his second assist of the series in the win, while Jeff Lerg turned away 33 shots in the defeat.
One Shy of "The Lemieux"
On December 31, 1988, Hockey Hall of Famer Mario Lemieux accomplished an individual feat that will likely never be duplicated, as he scored five goals five different ways. On Tuesday night, the Nailers nearly achieved the feat, as they scored their five goals in four different ways. Zack Torquato opened the scoring with an even strength goal in the first period to check the first item off of the list. The second type of goal was shorthanded, which was done by Riley Brace in the middle frame. Sahir Gill then tallied on the power play to give Wheeling three goals in three ways. Torquato's empty netter in the final minute of the game was the fourth different style of goal, although the Nailers weren't awarded a penalty shot, so they were unable to go 5-for-5.
First Trio in 17 Years
Zack Torquato put his name into the history books for the Nailers on Tuesday night, as he became the 115th player since 1992 to score a hat trick in the ECHL's postseason. He also became the sixth Wheeling player to do so, as well as the first since April 11, 1998, when Chris Jensen lit the lamp three times against the Toledo Storm in a 6-5 setback at Toledo Sports Arena. Two of Zack's three tallies came during the third period, giving the Nailers a three-goal advantage on both occasions. Eric Hartzell also made history on Tuesday night, as he became the first Wheeling goaltender to ever record two playoff assists. Hartzell's assist in game four tied him with Nick Boucher and Peter Delmas, who had both previously picked up one helper each, before Eric set the record in game six.
What They're Playing For
The winner of Wednesday night's deciding game will advance to the North Division Final Series, where they will meet up with the Fort Wayne Komets. Fort Wayne made quick work of its opening round series, downing the Kalamazoo Wings in five games. The Komets won each of the first three tilts, before Kalamazoo earned its lone win in game four, preventing Fort Wayne from clinching for one day. Mike Embach was the leading scorer in the series with seven points, while Matthew Pistilli led the way with four goals. Roman Will played in all five games between the pipes. Neither team will have much time to rest, as regardless of the winner, that series will begin on Friday night. Neither the Nailers nor Walleye have ever faced the Komets in postseason play.
Third Time Would be Charming
Wednesday night marks the third time in its 23-year team history that Wheeling will play a seventh and deciding game, as well as the third time it will take place on the road. Each of the previous two tilts needed extra hockey to be decided, as Cincinnati's Matt Syroczynski snapped a 1-1 tie at the 3:48 mark of double overtime in 2009, while Chris Kushneriuk scored at 8:23 of overtime in 2011 for a 4-3 win against Greenville. The Nailers have been involved in three other series which featured deciding fifth games - 1998 vs. Dayton (win), 2004 vs. Reading (loss), and 2006 at Toledo (loss). Neither the Toledo Walleye nor Storm have ever played a seventh game, but the Storm went 2-2 in decisive fifth games, while also collecting a victory in a decisive third game. This is the second time (2006) that Wheeling and Toledo will go the distance head-to-head, with both final games taking place in Ohio.
Second round playoff tickets and scheduling information will become available should the Nailers advance.
