Reign in Seventh Heaven Following 4-2 Win over Eagles
April 29, 2015 - ECHL (ECHL)
Ontario Reign News Release
ONTARIO, Calif. - The Ontario Reign (4-3), four-time ECHL Pacific Division Champions and proud ECHL affiliate of the NHL's 2014 Stanley Cup Champion Los Angeles Kings and Winnipeg Jets, advanced to the second round of the 2015 Kelly Cup Playoffs for only the second time in their history following a 4-2 victory over the Colorado Eagles (3-4) in the decisive Game 7 of their Pacific Division Semifinals series in front of a crowd of 2,727 on Tuesday night at Citizens Business Bank Arena.
Kyle Kraemer put Colorado up 1-0 in the first period by skating into the slot and wristing a shot past the glove of Jussi Olkinuora at 14:09.
The Reign tied the score on the power-play when Matt White's initial shot rang off the left post; Maxim Kitsyn steered the puck back into the crease, allowing White to tap the puck past Clarke Saunders at 16:49.
Ontario gained its first lead of the night in the second period when Norm Ezekiel took a pass from Dennis Brown and hammered home his own rebound past Saunders at 11:47.
Ezekiel played a big role in creating the next goal for the Reign as he leveled a hit on Kraemer in the defensive zone, creating a 3-on-1 situation for Ontario that ended with Everett Sheen snapping a shot over the shoulder of Saunders at 16:02.
Ontario then went ahead 4-1 when Matt Register carried the puck from the right circle around the Colorado net to the left circle before sending a pass to White at the right dot for a one-timer at 17:34.
Kraemer added a power-play goal at 19:47 to bring the Eagles to within two.
Colorado replaced Saunders with Jacob DeSerres to start the third period, but Ontario foiled the Eagles' attempt at a rally, and closed out the game - and the series - by becoming the eighth team in ECHL postseason history to come back and win a best-of-seven series after trailing three games to two. The game also marked the first Game 7 victory in club history for the Reign.
Olkinuora earned the win with 20 saves; Saunders took the loss with 10 stops in 40 minutes of work; DeSerres made six saves in 18:13 of play.
The Reign will face the Utah Grizzlies in the Pacific Division Finals, with Ontario holding home ice advantage. A full list of second round dates will be announced on Tuesday, Apr. 28. Fans can check the Reign schedule page by clicking here.
