Nailers Acquire Akeson & Coutu from Devils

WHEELING, WV ‚¬" The Wheeling Nailers announced Tuesday that the team is has acquired forward Jeremy Akeson and defenseman Justin Coutu from the Trenton Devils in exchange for defenseman Mike Gershon.

Akeson has spent the past three seasons with the Trenton Devils, posting 81 points (37g, 44a) and 240 penalty minutes in 152 games. In 57 appearances with Trenton this season, Akeson has registered 22 points (11g, 11a) and 93 penalty minutes. The 6-2, 220-lb forward was a three-year player at St. Francis Xavier University, scoring 23 points in 68 career games. The native of Ottawa, Ontario played his major junior hockey career with his hometown team the Ottawa 67's of the Ontario Hockey League. In four seasons with Ottawa, Akeson totaled 99 points (52g, 47a).

Coutu has played the past two and a half seasons with Trenton. In 132 appearances with the Devils, the 6-0, 205-lb defenseman has posted 33 points (6g, 27 a). This season, Coutu has totaled 12 points (1g, 11a) in 49 games played with the Devils. He scored his lone of the season in a game at Wheeling on November 12. Last Season the Maple Ridge, BC native, played four games with the Lowell Devils of the American Hockey League. His professional hockey career includes time with the Mississippi Sea Wolves, Johnstown Chiefs, and the Augusta Lynx of the ECHL.

Gershon leaves Wheeling after registering 18 points (4g, 14a) in 49 games played this season. The Sparta, NJ native totaled 35 points (7g, 28a) in 72 games played last season with the Port Huron Icehawks of the IHL. Prior to his professional career, Gershon was a four-year player at Suny-Brockport where he amassed 43 points in 101 career games.

The Nailers battle division rival Kalamazoo on Friday in Johnstown for Pink in the Rink night at the Cambria County War Memorial.
