Myrtle Streak Ends as Dash Win 3-2 Thriller

Winston-Salem Dash News Release

MYRTLE BEACH, SC (JUNE 6, 2011) - Jason Bour's RBI groundout snapped a tie game in the ninth inning and Addison Reed withstood an epic at bat from Ryan Strausborger with the tying run in scoring position to propel the Dash to a 3-2 win over the Pelicans on Monday night. The series-opening win snapped Winston-Salem's nine-game losing streak at BB&T Coastal Field and was the team's sixth in the last eight games.

A dramatic end to the bottom of the eighth inning set up the exciting ninth. With the score tied at two and Mike Olt at second base representing the go-ahead run for Myrtle Beach, Santiago Chirino lined a ball to right field for a base hit. Olt was waved around third base, but Jose Martinez' throw from right beat the runner and Bour absorbed a crushing blow from Olt while holding onto the ball for the final out of inning. The hit was so vicious that Olt had to leave the game following the play.

In the ninth, Ian Gac led off with a walk against Joseph Ortiz and was pinch-run for by Kyle Colligan. An Andy Wilkins bunt moved Colligan to second base and he got to third on Nick Ciolli's base hit, prompting a pitching change for the Pelicans. Johan Yan's first pitch to Bour was chopped to third base. Chirino got one out at second, but a good takeout slide by Ciolli forced an inaccurate throw to first to keep Winston-Salem (27-30) out of the double play, allowing Colligan to score and snap the tie.

The Pelicans (33-24) made things interesting in the bottom of the inning when Leury Garcia singled on a bunt and stole second base with one out. Reed, who entered the game to start the eighth, struck out Jared Bolden to bring up Strausborger, representing Myrtle's final chance at extending the contest. Reed got ahead in the count 0-2, but Strausborger fouled off pitch after pitch, mostly mid-90s fastballs, to stay alive. On the 13th pitch of the at bat, he looped a ball to right field for Martinez to finish the game and deliver Winston-Salem a long-desired win.

The Dash had lost nine straight games at the home of the Pelicans, their last win at BB&T Coastal Field coming on April 22, 2010. The drought of 411 days ended thanks to good pitching and clutch hitting.

Winston-Salem grabbed the lead first in the third inning against Pelicans starter Wilfredo Boscan. With two outs, Tyler Saladino and Jared Mitchell singled. Martinez drove them both in with a double down the left field line to make it 2-0 Dash.

Myrtle scored a run in the bottom of the inning on Strausborger's RBI single against Joe Serafin. The home team tied things one inning later on Chirino's sacrifice fly. The game remained 2-2 until Winston scored in the ninth.

Neither starter factored into the decision. Serafin threw a season-best seven innings, scattering seven hits and two runs. Boscan also went seven frames, yielding two runs on five hits.

Reed (2-0) collected the win with his high-wire two-inning performance while Ortiz (3-2) was charged with the loss.

Game two of the series is on Tuesday night when RHP Terry Doyle (1-5, 3.05) matches up against RHP Joe Wieland (5-3, 2.08). First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. with the audio broadcast starting at 6:45 on www.wsdash.com .

The Dash return to BB&T Ballpark for the final home stand of the first half on Friday at 7:05 p.m. against the Wilmington Blue Rocks. The game will be televised on WXII's THIS Carolina channel that evening.
