Myles' Cycle Can't Save RubberDucks
August 25, 2015 - Eastern League (EL1)
Akron RubberDucks News Release
Akron's Bryson Myles hit for the cycle on Tuesday night, but it wasn't enough to save the RubberDucks from their seventh straight loss in a heartbreaking, 9-7 setback to the Trenton Thunder at Arm and Hammer Park.
Turning Point
After the RubberDucks took a 7-6 lead in the eighth on a solo homer by Myles that completed the cycle for the RubberDucks outfielder, the Thunder stormed back in the bottom of the eighth against right-hander Casey Weathers (0- 3). A walk to Francisco Arcia and a single by Cito Culver put a pair of runners on for Trenton lead-off man Jake Cave. With one out, Cave laced a two-run triple to right to give Trenton an 8-6 lead. He later scored on a wild pitch to extend the lead to 9-7.
Mound Presence
The Thunder (67-61) battered Akron starter Duke von Schamann for 12 hits and six runs over 5 2/3 innings. Trenton starter Rookie Davis didn't fare much better, also yielding six earned runs in 5 1/3 innings. The win went to Trenton reliever Evan Rutckyj (1-0) who picked up his first Double-A victory by recording two outs and stranding two Akron runners on base in the eighth inning. Closer Mark Montgomery earned his 14th save for Trenton.
Duck Tales
Myles accomplished his first career cycle and the fifth in Akron franchise history. He tripled in a pair of runs in the second, doubled in the fourth, singled in the sixth, and completed the cycle by drilling a homer to left field off Taylor Garrison in the eighth. He went deep on a 2-2 pitch. He finished 4-5, with three RBI on the night. It was the first cycle for the RubberDucks since Jordan Smith did it at Reading on July 27th of last season.
Notes
The RubberDucks (66-63) lost for the seventh straight time, which represents the longest losing streak of the season... The loss was also costly because Altoona defeated Reading, 3-2, Tuesday, to pull three games ahead of Akron in the EL West wild card race There are 13 games remaining in the regular season...Time of game: 2:58...Attendance: 4,363.
Up Next
The RubberDucks and Thunder (67-61) will play the finale of the series on Wednesday night at 2:00. RHP D.J. Brown is expected to start for Akron. Trenton has not announced a starter. The game will be broadcast on Fox Sports 1350 AM and at www.akronrubberducks.com.
