New Hampshire Fisher Cats News Release
PORTLAND, MAINE - The New Hampshire Fisher Cats rode a fantastic pitching performance from starter Casey Lawrence to victory Tuesday night, blanking the Portland Sea Dogs 3-0 at Hadlock Field.
The Fisher Cats (63-63) climbed back to .500 with the win, their fourth straight, and can secure a win in the season series against the Sea Dogs. Portland (47-82) fell 35 games below .500 for the first time in franchise history. Lawrence (W, 12-12) earned his 21th career win in a Fisher Cats uniform, tops among all New Hampshire starters since the team's inception in 2005.
The Fisher Cats cracked the scoreboard first in the top of the third inning, as Jorge Flores and Roemon Fields hit consecutive singles to lead off the frame and put runners on first and second against Portland starter Danny Rosenbaum (L, 0-9). Melky Mesa smashed a double to left-center field, scoring Flores and advancing Fields to third base. With one out, Kevin Nolan lofted a sacrifice fly to right, scoring Fields and making it a 2-0 lead for New Hampshire.
In the top of the fifth frame, the Fisher Cats gained a little bit more breathing room. Dwight Smith, Jr. lined up a fastball from Rosenbaum and blasted it over the right-center field fence. The solo homer was Smith's seventh round-tripper of the year, and it extended New Hampshire's edge to 3-0. That was all the Fisher Cats would need, as the superb pitching and defense of New Hampshire carried the team the rest of the way.
Lawrence fired eight shutout frames for the win, allowing only three hits and two walks while whiffing five. Blake McFarland earned his 14th save with a single shutout inning, striking out three and allowing only one hit.
The Fisher Cats will shoot for the sweep Wednesday evening, with lefty Scott Barnes drawing the start for New Hampshire against Portland righty Luis Diaz. First pitch is at 6:00 p.m., and Ben Gellman has the radio call beginning at 5:45 p.m. on the WGIR Fisher Cats Radio Network and www.nhfishercats.com.
The Fisher Cats return home for the final homestand of 2015 on Monday, Aug. 31. The Future Red Sox, the Portland Sea Dogs will be in town with two Atlas Fireworks shows, free t-shirts and posters, and a retirement ceremony for the No. 29 in honor of New Hampshire legend Chris Carpenter. Tickets are available at www.nhfishercats.com, by calling (603) 641-2005, or by visiting the team box office at Northeast Delta Dental Stadium.
