NYSEG Stadium - Binghamton, NY - 5:35 PM
LAST GAME: The Binghamton Mets opened the series by beating down the Erie SeaWolves, 10-1, Monday night at NYSEG Stadium. Binghamton scored four runs in two separate innings, pounding out 13 hits in the win. Brock Peterson had three hits and two RBI, while TJ Rivera went 4-for-4 with two RBI and a walk. It was the most runs scored by the B-Mets in two weeks and their largest margin of victory this season. Rainy Lara picked up the victory, allowing a run in six innings. Three separate B-Met relievers combined to toss three no-hit innings. Rehabber Erik Goeddel worked a scoreless eighth inning.
BINGHAMTON STARTERS: RHP Kevin McGowan makes his B-Met debut, getting the nod in game one. McGowan made 23 appearances, 22 starts, in St. Lucie (High-A), where he went 6-10 with a 4.36 ERA. He's in his third season in the Mets organization, after getting drafted in the 13th round of the 2013 draft. He's 1-6 in his last 11 starts. LHP Adam Kolarek gets the ball in game two, making his second career start. His first came back in 2011 as a member of Savannah (Low-A). This season, Kolarek has made 45 relief appearances for the B-Mets and has not allowed a run in his last 12 innings. He has made two scoreless appearances against Erie this season, both on the road.
ERIE STARTERS: RHP Chad Green makes the start for Erie in game one. It will be Green's 25th start of the year and first against Binghamton. His last win came on August 2nd, which snapped a nine decision losing streak and a winless drought of 12 starts. He's tied with two other pitchers for the most losses in the league, while also ranking top five in strikeouts. RHP Melvin Mercedes gets the ball in game two, making his second career start. The other came earlier this season with Toledo (AAA). He has made 13 relief appearances for Erie this season, including one against Binghamton where he tossed two scoreless frames.
DOUBLEHEADERS: Tuesday is Binghamton's third and final doubleheader in the past week. Overall, it's Binghamton's fourth doubleheader of the season. Binghamton has split each of the first three, winning the opening game and dropping the nightcap all three times.
GREAT JULY: The B-Mets went 19-10 in July, their most wins in a month last June, 2014. Outside of that month, the B-Mets have been under .500 since the start of May. That includes an 11-10 August.
HOME STRETCH: The B-Mets are in the middle of playing 20 games in 18 days to close out the season, including two doubleheaders. Binghamton's last scheduled day off was August 17th.
CAN'T STOP: TJ Rivera was 4-for-4 with a walk and two RBI in Monday's win. It was Rivera's third four-hit game with Binghamton this season and the second in the past two weeks. Rivera is batting .370 in his 21 games since returning to the B-Mets.
BANGED UP: Gavin Cecchini has missed each of the past five games for the B-Mets. Cecchini currently ranks second in the league in batting average (.317) and is top five in five other offensive categories. He's batting .365 since the All-Star break. Josh Rodriguez has played in just one game over the past two weeks. He currently ranks second in the league in home runs (18) and RBI (69). He's also top five in the league in three other offensive categories.
FILLING IN: LJ Mazzilli has hit leadoff in each of the past five games in Cecchini's absence, going 4-for-18. It's the first time he's batting leadoff this season. Mazzilli is batting .340 in first innings this season, and .389 when leading off.
NEXT GAME PREVIEW: The B-Mets conclude their series with Erie Wednesday at 6:35 PM. LHP Steven Matz starts for Binghamton on rehab against LHP Josh Turley.
