Binghamton Rumble Ponies News Release
BINGHAMTON, NY - The Binghamton Mets were swept in a doubleheader, by scores of 5-1 and 3-1, at the hands of the Erie SeaWolves Tuesday night at NYSEG Stadium. It's the first time the B-Mets have gone winless in a doubleheader this season.
Game One- Erie 5, Binghamton 1
Kevin McGowan got roughed up in his Double-A debut, as the SeaWolves scored four runs in the first two innings of their 5-1 victory.
The SeaWolves struck first just one batter into the game. Wynton Bernard took a trip around the bases after tripling to right field and scoring on a spiked throw from LJ Mazzilli in shallow right field.
Binghamton would tie things up in the home half, when TJ Rivera hit a one-out double, moved to third and came down to score on a Brock Peterson fly out to center. The B-Mets would not score over the next 11 innings.
Erie responded with three runs in the second inning to take the lead for good. After getting the first two outs, McGowan allowed five consecutive hits by the SeaWolves to plate the three runs. Alberto Gonzalez, Harold Castro and Wynton Bernard each produced a run scoring hit.
The SeaWolves would tack on another run in the fourth inning on a Castro sacrifice fly.
After the first inning, the B-Mets did not have multiple runners in an inning until the seventh, when they stranded two on base.
Chad Green (4-14) earned the win, tossing a complete game and holding the B-Mets to one run. McGowan (0-1) suffered the loss in his debut, allowing five runs in 3-1/3 innings.
Game Two- Erie 3, Binghamton 1
The B-Mets offense continued to sputter, as Binghamton wasted a handful of opportunities in their 3-1 loss in the nightcap.
Adam Kolarek and Melvin Mercedes were each making their second career starts and held the opposition scoreless through the first three innings. Kolarek opened the fourth with a leadoff walk. After retiring the next two batters, he gave way to reliever Jeff Walters. Walters was greeted with back-to-back run producing doubles from Gonzalez and Connor Harrell to get the SeaWolves on the board.
Binghamton squandered a bases loaded opportunity in the first inning, when Vince Belnome hit into an inning-ending double play to second. The B-Mets also left two on base in the fourth.
The B-Mets got on the board in sixth, when they got the first two runners on. With an out, Vince Belnome ripped a double to right center field to score TJ Rivera. Trailing by a run with two men in scoring position, Joe Benson lofted a fly ball to centerfield that was nabbed by Harrell on a diving catch. Rodriguez, who broke from third base immediately, was then doubled to end the threat.
Erie added a run in the top of the seventh off Paul Sewald after a Wade Gaynor triple and an RBI single from Bernard. The B-Mets wasted a leadoff single in the home half and fell 3-1.
Paul Voelker (1-1) earned the win in relief, getting the final five outs of the game. Kolarek (2-2) earned the loss, allowing one run and one hit in 3.2 innings.
The B-Mets (69-59) conclude their series with Erie Wednesday with at 6:35 PM. LHP Steven Matz gets the ball on rehab against LHP Josh Turley (11-7, 3.48). The Horizons Federal Credit Union Pregame Show can be heard starting at 6:20 on Newsradio 1290 WNBF and the Binghamton Mets channel on TuneIn.
POSTGAME NOTES: It was the third and final doubleheader for the B-Mets in the past week...Josh Rodriguez returned to the lineup and played in both games...Binghamton's lead over Trenton was cut to two games.
