New Hampshire Fisher Cats News Release

BINGHAMTON, NY - The New Hampshire Fisher Cats battled back from multiple deficits and got a bit of clutch hitting in the 10th inning when Jack Murphy doubled home the winning runs, downing the Binghamton Mets 5-3 Sunday afternoon at NYSEG Stadium.

The Fisher Cats (64-67) avoided a series sweep and kept their playoff hopes alive, as either a loss by them or a win by the Mets (73-60) would eliminate New Hampshire from postseason contention. Murphy drove home three runs in his first start since being activated from the disabled list on Saturday.

The B-Mets got on the board first against Fisher Cats starter Casey Lawrence in the bottom of the second inning. Vince Belnome cracked a one-out single, and Jonathan Galvez hammered a double to deep left-center field to score him, giving Binghamton the early 1-0 lead.

New Hampshire jumped ahead in the top of the third against Binghamton starter Robert Gsellman. Jorge Flores bunted his way aboard with one out, and Roemon Fields hit a grounder that second baseman LJ Mazzilli booted for a two-base error. With runners on second and third, Dwight Smith, Jr. sliced a single through the 5-6 hole that scored both runners and putting New Hampshire in front 2-1.

The Mets tied things up in the bottom of the frame, though, as T.J. Rivera hit a two-out double to center, and Josh Rodriguez brought him home with a single to even the score at 2-2. Binghamton took a 3-2 lead in the fourth inning, as Belnome took Lawrence's first pitch of the inning way past the right field fence for a solo homer.

The Fisher Cats evened things up in the top of the sixth inning. K.C. Hobson led off the inning with a single, and advanced to third on Kevin Nolan's double to left. Murphy lifted a sacrifice fly to center, scoring Hobson and tying the ballgame at three runs apiece.

New Hampshire broke back in front in the top of the 10th inning against Binghamton reliever Adam Kolarek (L, 2-3). Smith started the inning with a bunt single to the right side, and moved to second when Melky Mesa hit a frozen rope single to center field. Hobson laid down a sacrifice bunt to advance the runners, and Kolarek intentionally walked Nolan to load the bases. Murphy ripped the first pitch he saw over Brock Peterson's head in left field for a double, scoring Smith and Mesa to give New Hampshire their final 5-3 lead.

Lawrence took a no-decision for the first time all season, allowing three runs on six hits and two walks over six innings while striking out four. Chad Girodo fanned four in two innings of work, allowing one hit. Blake McFarland (W, 3-3) earned the win with two no-hit innings, walking one and recording one strikeout.

On Monday, the Fisher Cats will open up their final four-game home series of 2015 against the Portland Sea Dogs, with lefty Luis Perez getting the ball for New Hampshire against Portland righty Luis Diaz. First pitch is at 6:35 p.m., and Tom Gauthier has the radio call beginning at 6:15 p.m. on the WGIR Fisher Cats Radio Network and www.nhfishercats.com.

The Fisher Cats return home for the final homestand of 2015 on Monday, Aug. 31. The Future Red Sox, the Portland Sea Dogs will be in town with two Atlas Fireworks shows, free t-shirts and posters, and a retirement ceremony for the No. 29 in honor of New Hampshire legend Chris Carpenter. Tickets are available at www.nhfishercats.com, by calling (603) 641-2005, or by visiting the team box office at Northeast Delta Dental Stadium.
