Albany River Rats News Release
PHILADELPHIA, PA - Goaltender Scott Munroe stopped all 24 shots he faced as he led the Philadelphia Phantoms to a 2-0 shutout of the Albany River Rats Monday afternoon at the Wachovia Spectrum.
After a scoreless first period the River Rats had a chance to grab the lead early in the when they were given a one-minute five-on-three power play. They managed several good scoring chances and Jakub Petruzalek's one-timer from the left face off circle beat goaltender Scott Munroe, but rang off the post, falling harmlessly wide. Later in the period Jerome Samson nearly scored a shorthanded goal when his slap shot from the right side beat Munroe's blocker and solidly hit the left post. Having dodged several bullets the Phantoms bore down and opened the scoring at 15:49 when rookie Jonathan Matsumoto fired in his own rebound for a power play goal, his 16th of the year, assisted by Jared Ross and Boyd Kane.
The Phantoms would double their lead early in the third period when Darroll Powe executed a textbook two-on-one rush, sliding a pass to a wide-open Frederic Cabana at the far post for a tap-in goal at 1:24. The River Rats tried to rally, but were constantly frustrated by Munroe and the Philadelphia defense. Albany pulled starter Justin Peters with just under two and a half minutes remaining, but could not spoiled the shutout bid.
Scott Munroe made 24 saves to record his 13th win and third shutout of the season, helping the Phantoms improve to 36-17-2-2 on the year. Justin Peters, making his first start since being recalled from Florida on February 14th, recorded 25 saves on 27 shots as the River Rats fell to 28-23-0-3 this season. Albany finished the game 0-for-6 on the power play, while Philadelphia was 1-for-6.
Next up for the River Rats is a Wednesday trip to Rochester and a 7:05 pm face off against the Americans at Blue Cross Arena. Albany's next home game is slated for Friday, February 22nd at the Times Union Center as they host the Bridgeport Sound Tigers at 7:00 pm.
