Bakersfield Condors News Release

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. -Ryan Munce picked up his second consecutive shootout victory and Scott Borders tied the game on a short-handed goal in the second period as the Bakersfield Condors defeated the Johnstown Chiefs by a score of 2-1 in front of 4,477 fans at the Rabobank Arena.

The Condors opened the game on the aggressive as Johnstown, fresh off a shootout loss to Las Vegas and a four-hour bus ride to Bakersfield the previous evening, struggled to create offensive opportunities. Bakersfield outshot the visiting Chiefs 17-5 in the first period, and killed off two Johnstown power plays.

The Chiefs were able to open scoring in the second period. Randy Rowe found the rebound on a shot from the top of the slot by Adam Henrich. Rowe sailed the puck over the right shoulder of Bakersfield goaltender Ryan Munce and under the crossbar to give Johnstown a 1-0 lead at 4:56 of the second period.

The Condors would answer back on a Chiefs power-play as Mike Hofstrand drew the attention of three defenders away from a wide-open Scott Borders, who positioned himself in front of Johnstown netminder Jonathan Boutin and buried it under the right pad to tie the game at 1-1 with 6:16 left to go in the second period.

The third period progressed evenly, and the Condors headed to overtime for a league-high ninth time in 15 games. Both teams saw golden opportunities in the extra frame, including a breakaway by Johnstown's Steve Cygan and a Condors 3-on-1 led by Alexandre Bolduc. Munce and Boutin both held their ground and forced the game to a shootout.

The first seven shooters failed to beat the netminders before Kevin St. Jacques lifted a puck over the left pad of Boutin. With Joe Tallari looming as the final shooter, Ryan Munce held firm and blocked Tallari's shot low on the left side to give the Condors the victory.

Ryan Munce earned the victory stopping 35 of 36 Chiefs shots in the win. Jonathan Boutin was given the loss, despite stopping 48 shots on 49 Bakersfield attempts.

Other notes: Ryan Munce has stopped his last ten shootout attempts. The Condors have not allowed a power play goal in their last four games. In eight home games at Rabobank Arena, the Condors have gone to overtime seven times. Fans in attendance were able to have their pictures taken with the Stanley Cup, which traveled to Bakersfield as part of the NHL/ECHL Stanley Cup Tour.

The Condors hit the Gulf Coast this weekend for a three-game series against the Pensacola Ice Pilots at the Pensacola Civic Center. Bakersfield returns home on Friday, December 9th to host the Stockton Thunder on Nip & Puck Night.
