Zion signs AHL tryout contract

BOISE, Idaho -Idaho Steelheads head coach Derek Laxdal today announced he has loaned defenseman Jonathan Zion (ZI-yon) to the club's American Hockey League (AHL) affiliate Iowa Stars. Zion is currently on an ECHL contract with the Steelheads and will sign an AHL Professional Tryout Contract making him eligible to suit up at the higher level.

Zion, a fourth round (110th overall) Toronto Maple Leafs 1999 NHL Draft Pick, is skating in his fourth professional season this year. The Ottawa, Ontario native has appeared in 16 games for the Idaho Steelheads this season and is currently tied for first among all ECHL defensemen with 18 points (5g, 13a). His 18 points also rank him in the top 15 among all ECHL point-getters.

Last season with Idaho, the 6-1, 210-pound defenseman had seven goals and 30 assists in 65 contests.
