Bowling Green Hot Rods News Release
Bowling Green, KY - Starting up a three-game series at Bowling Green Ballpark, the Bowling Green Hot Rods beat the Great Lakes Loons by a score of 5-2 on Friday night.
After losing three out of four to the South Bend Cubs, the Hot Rods won the series opener against the Loons courtesy of another strong start by pitcher Jose Mujica (W, 7-3).
For his eighth straight quality start, Mujica gave up just two runs on four hits in seven innings pitched for the win. He struck out five and for the third straight start didn't walk a single batter.
In his last eight starts dating back to July 1, Mujica is 4-0 with a 1.56 ERA by giving up just seven runs in 52.0 innings pitched.
The Bowling Green bats were able to secure the victory for Mujica in come-from-behind fashion. Trailing 1-0 in the fifth inning, a RBI single by designated hitter David Rodriguez and a run-scoring groundout off the bat of first basemen Matt Eureste gave the Hot Rods a 2-1 lead.
After the Loons tied the game up in the sixth inning, another RBI single by Rodriguez against Great Lakes reliever Ivan Vietez (L, 2-3) gave the Hot Rods in the lead. In the eighth inning, a two-run homer by third basemen Kevin Padlo off the left-field foul pole against Vietez gave the Hot Rods all the run support they needed.
For Padlo, the homer was his team-leading #16 of the year. It was just the Hot Rods third homer for the month of August.
Offensively, the Hot Rods churned out 11 hits, with Padlo, Rodriguez and shortstop Michael Russell totaling two each.
With the loss, the Hot Rods (34-19) are now 0.5 games behind the Cubs (35-19) for first place in the Midwest League Eastern Division for the second half. Combined with the Loons loss, the Hot Rods magic number to clinch a playoff berth is now at nine.
Bowling Green will continue a three-game series against the Great Lakes Loons on Saturday night. The Hot Rods will send LHP Mike Velasquez to the mound while Great Lakes will counter with RHP Imani Abdullah.
First pitch is scheduled for 6:35 pm.
