Cedar Rapids, IA- The Burlington Bees (60-64) lost game one of a three game series to the Cedar Rapids Kernels (66-56), 3-0, on Friday night at Perfect Game Field.
Cedar Rapids struck first on Friday night, scoring two runs in the bottom of the third inning. JJ Fernandez started the inning by reaching on an infield single. With two outs, Casey Scoggins drew a walk, putting runners at first and second. Nelson Molina singled into right field, scoring Fernandez while Scoggins scored when the throw went to second, giving the Kernels a 2-0 lead.
The Bees had their biggest threat of the night in the top of the fifth. With two outs, Michael Barash walked and then moved to second on a Brendon Sanger single. Jahmai Jones picked up his first hit as a Bee with an infield single, loading the bases. After a lengthy battle, Brennon Lund lined out sharply to the shortstop, ending the frame.
The Kernels added an insurance run in the bottom of the fifth inning. Manuel Guzman walked to open the inning. With two outs, Guzman stole second and moved to third on a throwing error. Nelson Molina chopped a single into right, scoring Guzman, upping the Kernels' lead to 3-0.
The Bees were held off the scoreboard, dropping game one of the series, 3-0. The shutout loss marked the ninth time the Bees have been shutout in 2016.
Lachlan Wells (5-3) threw 5.2 scoreless innings, earning the win. Luis Pena (4-8) was charged with the loss while Anthony McIver (9) earned the save. The Bees and the Kernels continue the series on Saturday night at 6:35 at Perfect Game Field. Jaime Barria makes the start for the Bees against Tyler Beardsley for Cedar Rapids.
