Dayton Dragons News Release

Grand Rapids, Mich.-Three West Michigan pitchers combined to allow just five hits as the Whitecaps edged the Dayton Dragons 2-1 on Friday night. The loss snapped the Dragons six-game winning streak in the first game of a three-game set at West Michigan.

Both West Michigan runs were unearned in the game, extending the Dragons pitchers' streak to 31 straight innings without allowing an earned run.

The Dragons took a brief 1-0 lead in the top of the fourth inning on a lead-off home run by Nick Senzel. The homer was Senzel's seventh of the year.

But West Michigan quickly took the lead as they scored two runs in the bottom of the fourth. With a runner at first and two outs, Brett Pirtle connected on a hard grounder along the first base line that got through James Vasquez for an error, allowing the run to score. Joey Havrilak then singled to drive in Pirtle and make it 2-1.

The Dragons did not have another base runner after Senzel's fourth inning home run until the eighth inning, when Alberti Chavez led off with a double to the gap in right-center field. But the next three hitters struck out and Chavez was stranded at second.

In the ninth, Senzel singled to center with one out. With two outs, Chris Okey singled to left to move Senzel, representing the tying run, to third. But Shane Mardirosian grounded out to third to end the game.

Dragons starting pitcher Jesus Reyes (5-4) pitched well but suffered the loss. He worked six innings and allowed two unearned runs on five hits with one walk and four strikeouts. Lucas Benenati worked two scoreless innings in relief of Reyes.

Senzel was 2 for 4 with the home run to lead the Dragons offensively.

The Dragons (20-34, 41-83) meet the Whitecaps (23-29, 62-57) on Saturday night at 7:10 in the second game of the series. Austin Orewiler (3-11, 3.88) will start for the Dragons against West Michigan's Beau Burrows (6-4, 3.43).

The next Dragons home game is Monday night when they host the Lansing Lugnuts at Fifth Third Field in the start to a four-game series.

All Dragons games are broadcast on radio on Fox Sports 980 WONE and on the internet at wone.com. Games are also available on the Dayton Dragons mobile app.
