GRAND CHUTE, WI - Boomer Biegalski held the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers to one run as the Beloit Snappers picked up a 5-1 win at Neuroscience Group Field at Fox Cities Stadium Friday night. The Snappers collected nine hits, including six for extra bases.
The Snappers (53-70 overall, 21-33 second half) gave a preview of what the night would be like as Trace Loehr doubled on the first pitch of the game from Miguel Diaz. The Rattlers righty got out of the inning without allowing a run.
Beloit grabbed the lead in the top of the second inning. Ryan Howell doubled and Edwin Diaz walked with one out. Wisconsin got the second out, but Loehr hit a two-out double on a 3-2 pitch from Miguel Diaz to drive in two runs for the Snappers for a 2-0 lead.
Jake Gatewood got the Rattlers (60-64, 26-28) on the scoreboard with a leadoff home run to start the bottom of the second. The homer was the thirteenth of the season for Gatewood.
The Snappers added to their lead with a single run in the fourth inning against Diaz. Jose Chavez singled with two outs to drive in Justin Higley from second base.
Wisconsin changed pitchers for the top of the fifth, but the Snappers added to their lead. Reliever Trey Supak retired the first batter he faced, but gave up a triple to Trent Gilbert. Brett Siddall drove in Gilbert with a single. Skye Bolt was next and he doubled to knock in Siddall for a 5-1 lead.
Neither team would threaten after the fifth inning.
Biegalski limited the Rattlers to six hits and struck out four over seven innings. Rob Huber worked a perfect eighth and Nolan Blackwood pitched a 1-2-3 ninth to close out the Rattlers.
In the second half Western Division Wild Card race, the Burlington Bees lost 3-0 at Cedar Rapids and the Quad Cities River Bandits beat Kane County 8-2. The Bees still hold the Wild Card Spot with a record of 28-26. Quad Cities moved their record to 27-27 to pull to within a game of Burlington. The Rattlers remain two games back of the Bees at 26-28. There are 16 games left in the regular season.
The Timber Rattlers and Snappers meet in game two of the series on Saturday night at Neuroscience Group Field at Fox Cities Stadium. Thomas Jankins (0-2, 2.82) is the scheduled starting pitcher for the Timber Rattlers. Beloit has named Brendan Butler (1-3, 3.00) as their starter. Game time is 6:35pm.
Saturday is Superhero Night with Batman and Superman are coming to the game to meet with aspiring superheroes. The first 1,000 crime fighters to enter the stadium will receive a poster of Lucas Erceg, Timber Rattlers third baseman and 2016 2nd round pick of the Milwaukee Brewers, courtesy of Van Lanen Printing. There will be a postgame fireworks display courtesy of Festival Foods. Children 14 and under may run the bases courtesy of Tundraland after the fireworks.
