Mujica Leads Durham over Tides
April 30, 2018 - International League (IL1)
Norfolk Tides News Release
The Durham Bulls got a strong start from Jose Mujica and some clutch hitting with two outs to double up the Tides 4-2 Monday night at Harbor Park.
Mujica (3-1) limited the Tides to five hits over seven solid innings to help pitch the Bulls to the win in the opener of the three-game set. The 21-year-old right-hander struck out five and walked two, facing just two batters over the minimum over his final four innings of work. Adam Kolarek followed Mujica's efforts with two perfect innings out of the bullpen, with the duo retiring each of the final 12 Norfolk batters they faced.
Michael Saunders plated Norfolk's lone runs of the contest in the third inning, when he connected on an opposite-field, two-out double that scored Sharlon Schoop and Drew Dosch.
Norfolk starter Yefry Ramirez (1-2) was the tough-luck loser despite turning in a Quality Start. Ramirez allowed three runs - all with two outs - on five hits over six innings, walking two while striking out seven. The 24-year-old right-hander, ranked as the #19 prospect in the Orioles system according to MLB.com, threw 98 pitches in the contest - the most by a Tides pitcher this season.
Over the last 12 contests, Norfolk's starting pitchers have now posted a 2.83 ERA (18 ER, 57.1 IP).
With the win, Durham (12-10) picked up its fourth straight victory and moved a half-game ahead of Norfolk (11-10) in the IL South division standings.
The two clubs will continue their three-game series Tuesday night at Harbor Park, with first pitch set for 6:35. Tim Melville (2-0, 1.65) gets the start for Norfolk and will be opposed by former Tides left-hander Vidal Nuno (1-1, 4.05).
Notes: Norfolk finished the month of April with a winning record for the first time since the Tides went 11-10 during the first month of the 2015 season... Drew Dosch, who led the IL with 36 doubles in 2017, doubled in the sixth inning - his fourth double in six games played this season...Tanner Scott tossed a scoreless inning of relief, the first time he's pitched in back-to-back games this year...Alex Presley singled in the fifth inning to extend his hitting streak to seven games.
