Louisville Bats Notes: April 30

April 30, 2018 - International League (IL1)
Louisville Bats News Release

BATS WELCOME THE CLIP SHOW: Louisville and Columbus start a three-game series at Louisville Slugger Field on Monday night. The Bats and Clippers have already met this season at LSF, with the Bats earning their first series win of 2018 by taking two of three from their division rivals on April 9-11. The Bats look to avoid losing three straight games right after winning three straight, while the Clippers try to win their third straight ballgame.

GOSSELIN ACTIVATED: Infielder Phil Gosselin was optioned to Class AAA Louisville and activated today. The journeyman has seen Major League action with 5 clubs: Atlanta (2013-15), Arizona (2015-16), Pittsburgh (2017), Texas (2017) and most recently Cincinnati (2018), batting .125 (3-for-24) with one home run and two RBI in 20 games with the Redlegs. Gosselin is the second recently optioned infielder to join Louisville, joining Cliff Pennington on the Bats' roster. Pennington, who's also spent time with 5 big league teams (OAK-ARI-TOR-LAA-CIN), made his LOU debut in Sunday's 6-1 loss, going 1-for-4 with a double and run scored.

ERVIN, WEISS TO DL: The Bats placed outfielder Phillip Ervin and right-handed relief pitcher Zack Weiss on the disabled list Monday. Ervin, who was recently optioned to Louisville, made one appearance for the Bats this season, going 1-for-2 with a double, walk, run scored and stolen base. Weiss has made 5 appearances with LOU this season, going 2-0 with a 1.59 ERA (1 ER/5.2 IP) with 4 walks and 5 strikeouts. He is the only Bats hurler with multiple wins in 2018, and he made his MLB debut with the Reds on April 12 (0.0ip, 2h, 4er, 2bb).

IT'S GONNA BE MAY: Heading into the final game of April, the Bats own an 8-11 record and will finish the opening month of the season below the .500 mark for the second straight season. Last year, the Bats were 9-14 in April, and 12-9 in 2016. Due to the three-game cancellation in Buffalo earlier in the month, LOU's 20 games played in April will be the fewest April games since 2009, when the Bats went 11-8 in the opening month of the season.

DIXON ENDS STREAK: Infielder/outfielder Brandon Dixon went 0-for-4 in Sunday's 6-1 loss to the Toledo Mud Hens, failing to reach base for the first time in 15 games this season. Dixon's on-base streak was all-the-more impressive considering he kept it alive during 2 pinch-hit appearances, notching a hit in both at-bats. D.J. Peterson and Steve Selsky are now tied for longest on-base streak on the active roster at 5 games.

JUST IN THE NICK OF TIME: Louisville top prospect Nick Senzel was scratched from the lineup on Sunday. He left in the sixth inning of Saturday's game after making a diving effort on a ball in shallow right field. Senzel is expected to return to Louisville's lineup for the series opener tonight against Columbus.

SCHOFIELD NAMED MANAGER: The Cincinnati Reds announced last Friday that Dick Schofield has been named interim manager for the Louisville Bats. Schofield, who was serving as Louisville's bench coach, replaces Pat Kelly , who managed the first 10 games of the 2018 season for Louisville, compiling a 4-6 record. Kelly was recently promoted to Major League bench coach for the Cincinnati Reds. The Reds also announced Darren Bragg will take over Schofield's previous role as Louisville's bench coach. Bragg is in his 12th season in the organization and was in his 10th as outfield coordinator at the time of his transfer to Louisville.
