Hens Fall to Indians in Bullpen Game

Dawel Lugo continued his hot streak as Toledo (15-7) fell to Indianapolis on Monday at Fifth Third Field by a score of 10-7. Lugo has recorded a hit in all but three games this season.

It was a bullpen game for the first-place home team on Monday, as RHP Paul Voelker got the start following Chad Bell's call up to the Tigers. Voelker went just one inning, allowing four earned runs on three hits. RHP Mark Montgomery came on in the second for Toledo, pitching two scoreless innings with two hits, two walks, and two strikeouts. In his first game with Toledo, LHP James Russell was called into action in the fourth, where he allowed four earned runs. Victor Alcantara served as the next Hens' pitcher, coming on for the home team in the fifth and sixth innings and allowed no runs. Zac Reininger toed the rubber for Toledo in the seventh and eighth innings, allowing one run on a solo homer. Kevin Comer entered the game in the ninth, retiring the Indians' batters in order.

Indianapolis dusted up starter Voelker in the first inning with five runs on three doubles, two walks, and.an RBI ground out. A throwing error from SS Ronny Rodriguez extended the early lead to 5-0 for the Indians.

Toledo responded with two runs in the bottom of the first off an RBI triple from 2B Dawel Lugo, his first of the season. RF Christin Stewart stepped to the plate with Lugo on third and promptly sent him home on a sacrifice fly to right center field.

The Hens continued to claw back into the game in the third following Stewart's fourth home run of the season on a blast to right field, scoring Lugo. This cut the Indians lead to 5-4. This marked Stewart's fourth multi-hit effort in five games.

Indianapolis responded with four runs in the next half inning following a single, walk, RBI single, and three run home run.

Toledo threatened again in the fifth inning after a lead-off double from 3B Pete Kozma, but a Mikie Mahtook fly out, Mike Gerber ground out, and Lugo strikeout ended the inning.

Indianapolis extended the lead to 10-4 on a solo shot in the eighth.

The Mud Hens responded by loading the bases in the bottom of the eighth inning after a double, walk, and single. DH Chad Huffman stepped to the plate and was awarded a bases-loaded walk and RBI. A throwing error on the Indianapolis catcher allowed Stewart to score and the runners to advance, as the Hens inched closer with a 10-6 score. A ground out from Rodriguez pushed the Hens to within three, as he scored Edwin Espinal.

The Mud Hens return to action on Tuesday night against Indianapolis for a 6:35 p.m. first pitch.
