Wilson Helps Power Chiefs Past IronPigs Monday

Allentown, PA - The Syracuse Chiefs beat the Lehigh Valley IronPigs, 5-4, Monday night at Coca-Cola Park. Jacob Wilson tallied three extra-base hits including two doubles and a home run with three RBIs, and Jose Marmolejos posted his first four-hit game in Triple-A. The win marked the Chiefs seventh in their league-high tenth one-run game this year.

Syracuse (13-8) started the scoring in the fourth inning off Tom Eshelman. Marmolejos singled and Matt Hague walked to put two on with no-one out. After a fly out, Wilson doubled down the left-field line to plate both runners and give the Chiefs a 2-0 lead. Bengie Gonzalez then followed on the next pitch with a double down the right-field line to score Wilson and push the lead to three.

Lehigh Valley (11-11) would find the next three runs of the game. In the fifth, Danny Ortiz and Joey Meneses each singled to start the inning against Tommy Milone. After a Milone strikeout, Heiker Meneses singled back up the middle to score Ortiz and cut the lead to two.

Milone was otherwise excellent, allowing just four hits and that run in six strong innings, with no walks and five strikeouts.

In the seventh, Ortiz started the inning against Phillips Valdez with a home run down the left-field line to cut the deficit to one. Joey Meneses then doubled and Heiker Meneses walked two batters later. Mitch Walding followed with a pinch-hit single to tie the game at three.

But the Chiefs again had an answer. Wilson drilled his first home run as a Chief over the wall in left in the top of the eighth to give Syracuse the lead back. Then an inning later, Hunter Jones his his first Triple-A home run over the fence in right to push the lead to 5-3.

The IronPigs threatened in the ninth against David Goforth. Joey Meneses walked and Nick Rickles singled to start the inning. Then after a fielder's choice at second and a strikeout, with runners on first and third, Roman Quinn doubled down the left field line to score Joey Meneses and bring the score to 5-4. With runners on second and third as the potential tying and winning runs, Goforth got Andrew Pullin to ground out to second to end the game.

The Chiefs and IronPigs continue their series Tuesday at 7:05 p.m. RHP Austin Voth is scheduled to start for Syracuse opposite RHP Jake Waguespack for Lehigh Valley.
