Knoxville Smokies News Release

Zebulon, NC - The Tennessee Smokies were befuddled from the start as they fell to the Carolina Mudcats 6-0 on a warm Tuesday afternoon at Five County Stadium. The Mudcats (5-11) salvaged a split in the four game series after losing the first two to the Smokies (8-8).

Carolina scored three runs off of starter Jay Jackson without a hit. Jackson balked the first run home in the first inning with Carson Kainer stationed at third. After retiring the first batter, Jackson issued three straight walks to load the bases in the sixth inning. Alex Maestri came in to help the Smokies out of the jam, but was ineffective has he walked in one and hit a batter to score another.

Jackson (4-4) was charged with four runs on three hits in 5.2 innings. Taking the loss, he walked four and struck out two.

Juan Francisco homered for the second straight day in the win for Carolina. His 15th homerun ties him with Rhyne Hughes of Montgomery and Stefan Gartrell of Birmingham for second most in the league.

Zack Cozart slapped an RBI single into right center and Logan Parker brought him home on a double for the final tally.

Lee Tabor (1-1) picked up the win with six scoreless innings for the Mudcats. He scattered four hits, walked two and struck out three Smokies.

Tennessee returns to Smokies Park on Wednesday to face Montgomery. The Biscuits are the AA-affiliate of the Tampa Bay Rays. The series will last four games, spanning July 8-11. Tickets can be purchased at the box office, by calling (865) 286-2300 or by visiting smokiesbaseball.com.
