Suns Blank Braves to Take Series

Pearl, Miss. - Mike Stanton finished a triple short of the cycle and belted an eighth inning, three-run homerun, while Nic Ungs and Kasey Olenberger combined for a five-hit shutout20leading the Jacksonville Suns (46-40, 11-5) to a 6-0 victory over the Mississippi Braves (37-48, 6-9) in front of 2,979 Tuesday night at Trustmark Park.

Ungs (5-1) dealt seven scoreless innings, scattering five hits with a walk and three strikeouts in the victory. Mississippi starter Scott Diamond (3-8) fell in the loss, allowing three runs and six hits with a walk and season-high ten strikeouts.

Jacksonville opened the scoring in the third inning when Nic Ungs drove in Tim Torres on a chopper to shortstop for a 1-0 lead. Chris de la Cruz later legged out an infield single to drive home Lorenzo Scott for a 2-0 score. Logan Morrison next doubled to left-centerfield, knocking in de la Cruz for a 3-0 score.

The Suns added three more runs in the20eighth inning against Braves reliever Jerome Gamble. After a de la Cruz single and Morrison walk, Mike Stanton belted a three-run homerun into the left field bullpen to open a 6-0 Suns lead.

Mississippi's closest chance at scoring came in the sixth inning as Brandon Hicks tried to score from second base on a Freddie Freeman single to right field. Suns right fielder Mike Stanton threw Hicks out at home for the second out of the inning.
