Mudcats Take Series Opener in Fayetteville

FAYETTEVILLE, NC - The Mudcats (19-7) opened the series against the Fayetteville Woodpeckers (16-12) with a 4-1 victory in Fayetteville.

Mudcats starter, Manuel Rodriguez (W, 2-2), went seven strong innings only giving up 1 run and 3 hits. The 7-inning performance is the deepest any Mudcats starter has gone in a game this season. Rodriguez was perfect through 4.1 innings before Waner Luciano singled to center field to break up the perfect game.

Yophery Rodriguez was all the scoring offense for the Mudcats. Rodriguez hit an RBI double in the top of the third inning to score Daniel Guilarte to give the Mudcats a 1-0 lead. In the top of the 7th inning, he blasted a 3-run home run to right field to give the Mudcats a 4-0 lead. That was all the scoring the Mudcats needed for the night.

Fayetteville's DH, Juan Santander, gives the Woodpeckers their only run of the game with a solo home run to right center in the bottom of the 7th inning, making the score 4-1.

Mudcats reliever, K.C. Hunt (S, 1) came in relief for Rodriguez in the 8th inning to close out the game and pick up his first save of the season. Hunt gave up 1 hit and striking out 4 of the 8 batters faced in 2 innings, keeping his season ERA at 0.00.

Game 2 of the series continues tomorrow night in Fayetteville. RHP Bishop Letson (0-0, 1.04) will be on the bump for the Mudcats and will be opposed by RHP Sandy Mejia (1-1, 6.23) for the Woodpeckers. Game time is schedule for 6:35pm.
