Carolina Mudcats News Release

Zebulon, NC --- Lee Mitchell had three hits and two RBI while four Carolina pitchers checked West Tenn's offense on one hit over the final seven innings as the Mudcats defeated the Diamond Jaxx 3-1 in the series opener at Five County Stadium on Friday night.

Mitchell singled home Rex Rundgren in the third, then dropped a fifth inning single into right field to bring home Eric Riggs as Carolina (20-21) defeated the Diamond Jaxx for the fifth straight meeting. Riggs had doubled home Alejandro DeAza from first base prior to the Mitchell hit. DeAza and Logan Kensing each began major league rehab assignments for the Florida Marlins on Friday night.

Meanwhile, Chris Seddon (W, 5-7) notched his second win since joining the Marlins organization, working 5 2/3 innings on three hits and one run. A bases-loaded double play in the second inning instigated a string of 10 consecutive batters retired. Scott Nestor, Logan Kensing and Chris Mobley (S, 8) combined to no-hit the Diamond Jaxx over the final 3 1/3 innings.

DeAza finished 1-3 with a walk, bunt single and run scored, while Kensing pitched a perfect eighth inning with two strikeouts.

Jimmy Serrano (4-1, 3.09) starts the second game of the series on Saturday night against Douglas Fister (3-8, 4.70) at 6:15 PM ET.
