May 29, 2015 - Carolina League (CarL1)
Myrtle Beach Pelicans News Release
ZEBULON, N.C. (MAY 29, 2015) - A twelve game losing streak came to a close for the Carolina Mudcats on Friday as they beat the Myrtle Beach Pelicans, Class A-Advanced affiliate of the Chicago Cubs, 2-0 at Five County Stadium. Mudcats starting pitcher Seth Webster, who picked up his first win, pitched in the independent Frontier League as recently as this season before being signed as a non-drafted free agent by the Atlanta Braves on May 18.
Carolina (20-24) hopped out to a quick lead in the first inning of the series finale. Center fielder Keith Curcio walked to lead off the frame and came home on an RBI fielder's choice by designated hitter Sal Giardina. Carolina then added to its lead when Curcio doubled to start the bottom of the third, and two batters later, left fielder Joey Terdoslovich rifled a single to center to put the home team ahead 2-0.
Despite being shut out for just the third time this year, the Pelicans (29-16) still maintain their first place lead in the Carolina League Southern Division standings by five games over second-place Salem (25-23).
Duane Underwood Jr. (5-1) finished with six innings in the book, surrendering two earned runs on four hits in his first loss of the year. The righty walked two and struck out a batter. Right-handed reliever Josh Conway took the mound in the seventh, walking a batter across two hitless frames.
Webster (1-1) picked up his first win as a Mudcat after seven shutout innings on the mound, blanking the Pelicans on four hits while walking a pair and striking out six. Since his promotion to Carolina from Class-A Rome, the right-hander has made two seven-inning appearances, with the first being a seven innings loss against the Wilmington Blue Rocks. He was replaced by left-hander Matt Marksberry, who tossed perfect eighth and ninth innings for his first save.
The Pelicans open up another series against the Potomac Nationals on Saturday. First pitch from Pfitzner Stadium is scheduled for 6:35 p.m. ET. The Pelicans will hand the ball to right-hander Paul Blackburn (3-2, 4.64) while the Nationals send highly touted right-handed prospect Reynaldo Lopez (2-1, 2.75) to the mound.
Saturday's game can be heard live, presented by Courtyard Myrtle Beach at Barefoot Landing, on 1450 WRNN-AM ESPN Myrtle Beach, on the TuneIn Radio App, and via the MiLB First Pitch App, beginning with the Pregame Show at 6:15 p.m. ET.
The 2015 season marks the 17th season for the Pelicans franchise and first as the Class A-Advanced affiliate of the Chicago Cubs. For information on tickets to see the Pelicans in 2015, please call (843) 918-6000, e-mail info@myrtlebeachpelicans.com, or visit www.MyrtleBeachPelicans.com.
