LAST TIME OUT: Lynchburg committed a season-high six errors and fell to Winston Salem, 7-3, at BB&T Ballpark last night...The Hillcats plated the first run of the game in the second when 1B NELLIE RODRIGUEZ walked, and 3B PAUL HENDRIXÂ hit an RBI double into the right-center field gap to give the Hillcats a 1-0 lead...However, Lynchburg committed a pair of errors in the bottom of the second to open the door for the Dash...C OMAR NARVAEZ and RF KEENYN WALKER singled...They both advanced 90-feet on a throwing error by HENDRIX later in the frame...With the bases loaded and one out, DH T.J. WILLIAMS singled to tie the game, 1-1...Later in the frame, two runs scored on a fielder's choice hit by CF ADAM ENGEL where 2B JAMES ROBERTS committed a throwing error while trying to turn a double play...Lynchburg stayed close when RF BRADLEY ZIMMER ZIMMER walked in the fourth and advanced to third on a double by C ERIC HAASE...With LF MIKE PAPIbatting, ZIMMER scored on a balk by RHP JAKE COSE to cut the deficit to 3-2...With the score still 3-2 entering the sixth, Winston-Salem capitalized on three more Hillcats errors to take a 5-2 advantage...NARVAEZ and WALKER walked and singled, respectively, to open the frame...A throwing error by RHP DELVY FRANCISCO on a bunt by SS CLEULUIS RONDONÂ allowed everyone to be safe and load the bases for LF MICHAEL SUITER, who hit a sacrifice fly to left field to make it 4-2...Two errors on one play allowed a run to score when FRANCISCO tried to pick off WALKER at second base and threw the ball into center field...CLINT FRAZIER'S return throw to the infield was also off the mark, and WALKER scored on the combination of miscues...Winston-Salem added two more runs in the seventh on three hits, including RBI singles by WALKER and RONDON...Trailing 7-2 in the ninth, Lynchburg's first three batters reached...HENDRIX walked, and PAPI made his way on base after a bad throw by 3B TREY MICHALCZEWSKI...With two on and nobody out, 2B JAMES ROBERTSÂ singled home HENDRIX to make it 7-3 with still nobody out and the tying run on-deck, but the next three batters were retired in order to end the threat...
VS. WINSTON-SALEM: This marks the first series of the year between Lynchburg and Winston-Salem this year...The two teams will meet a total of 16 times in 2015...Last season, Lynchburg went 12-8 against the Dash...The Carolina Mudcats (last year's High-A Cleveland Indians affiliate) were 13-7 against Winston in 2014 with a batting average of .282, which was the team's best mark against any opponent last season...C ALEX MONSALVE has the best numbers of any returning Mudcat with a .326 average, two doubles, a triple, two homers and 10 RBIs in 11 games...ADAM ENGEL hit .310 against the Mudcats last year with six stolen bases and five runs in only seven games...Through two games this season, NELLIE RODRIGUEZ is 4-for-7 with a double, a home run and three of the team's six RBIs...KEENYN WALKER is 4-for-5 with two walks, three RBIs and two runs scored...
SITUATIONAL HITTERS: Last night was a rarity for the Hillcats, as they went 1-for-11 with runners in scoring position...Heading into the game, the Hillcats had a .278 average in those situations, which was only three points behind Wilmington for the league's best mark (.281)...Lynchburg continues to lead the Carolina League with a .310 average with the bases loaded, 24 points higher than the next-best team (Myrtle Beach, .286)...
NELLIE, NELLIE: 1B NELLIE RODRIGUEZÂ saw his streak of at least one RBI in nine straight games end last night, but he still leads the league with 36 for the season, including 18 RBIs in his last 14 games...Additionally, RODRIGUEZ is currently enjoying a season-high eight-game hitting streak where he has raised his batting average from .220 to .255...He is 12-for-29 with five doubles and a home run in his last eight contests...Rodriguez was drafted in the 15th round out of George Washington HS in New York, N.Y., which is the same high school as Manny Ramirez...
THE OTHER RODRIGUEZ: OF LUIGI RODRIGUEZ went 2-for-5 yesterday with a triple for his team-leading 15th multi-hit game of the year...With the three-base hit, RODRIGUEZ moved intothe league lead for slugging percentage with a .545 mark...He is tied for the league lead with BRADLEY ZIMMER with eight home runs...The 22-year-old also ranks sixth in batting average (.299) and fourth in the following categories: runs (27), triples (4), stolen bases (11), and RBIs (27)...
APRIL SHOWERS BRING MAY POWER: Lynchburg has hit 22 home runs in the month of May, which is more than any other Carolina League team has for the entire season...The Hillcats did not hit a home run in the first six games of the month, but the team has been pouring it on ever since, hitting 22 home runs in the past 21 games...
NOT SLOWING DOWN: Reigning Carolina League Player of the Week, OF BRADLEYÂ ZIMMER has carried his success into this week, as he has reached base multiple times in each of his last 12 games, which includes six multi-hit performances...The No. 2 prospect in the Indians organization stole a base Wednesday night to tie ADAM ENGEL for second in the league with 20...He also scored twice to push his league-leading total to 41...
SLUG IT OUT: Despite a .245 batting average that ranks in the bottom half of the league, Lynchburg leads the Carolina League in a wide range of offensive categories, including runs scored (213), RBIs (195), home runs (35), total bases (599), slugging percentage (.388), hit by pitch (26), sacrifice flies (19), and stolen base success rate (81.4 percent)...The 'Cats are only three away from the league lead with 88 doubles (Salem, 91)...
