Carolina Mudcats News Release
ZEBULON, N.C. - Luke Adams, Matt Wood, Hedbert Perez and Jadher Areinamo each had run scoring hits in the first as the Carolina Mudcats rallied for seven runs and seven hits in the opening frame while taking Sunday's series finale 7-0 versus the Salem Red Sox at Five County Stadium. Adams, Perez and Areinamo each had RBI doubles in the first and five Carolina pitchers combined on a three-hit shutout of the Red Sox in Sunday's series and homestand finale.
The Carolina (3-5) half of the first started with both Gregory Barrios and Daniel Guilarte reaching on consecutive errors by Salem (5-4) third baseman Lyonell James. Barrios went on to steal second during Guilarte's at bat and would score from third on a groundout to first by Tayden Hall. Adams then doubled in Guilarte, Wood singled in Adams, Jace Avina singled, Perez doubled in Wood and Areinamo doubled to score both Avina and Perez.
In all, the Mudcats scored seven unearned runs on seven hits in the first. Five of those seven hits, and all seven runs were allowed in by starter Elmer Rodriguez-Cruz (0-1). Reliever Gabriel Jackson took over for Rodriguez-Cruz in the first, but would hold the Mudcats to just two other hits while finishing the rest of the inning. The Mudcats were additionally held to just two more hits over the remainder of the game by the Salem bullpen.
Barrios ended up batting twice in the first, but did not record a hit in the opening frame. He later went on to single in the third and then connected on Carolina's first triple of the season in the fifth. Barrios started the season 0-for-27 before his third inning single in Sunday's game.
Aidan Maldonado started for the Mudcats and pitched through three scoreless innings with one hit allowed, one walk and three strikeouts. Reliever Jeison Pena (1-0) tossed a scoreless fourth and earned the victory. Alexander Vallecillo then pitched the next three innings while finishing with a walk and two strikeouts. The eighth and ninth then belonged to Tanner Shears and Shane Smith. Shears struck out two while facing three in the eighth. Smith also faced three and finished the game with a strikeout.
The shutout victory was Carolina's first of the season and their third win overall. It was also their second victory in the homestand as the Mudcats finished at 2-4 in the six-game series against the Red Sox.
