Fayetteville Woodpeckers News Release
Fayetteville, NC - The Fayetteville Woodpeckers (6-2) led 4-3 and were one out away from securing a sweep of the Fredericksburg Nationals (3-6) on Sunday afternoon, until Johnathon Thomas clubbed a three-run home run in the top of the ninth inning to sink Fayetteville 6-4. The loss ended a six-game winning streak, which tied a franchise record.
Sandro Gaston enjoyed a two-double day and started the scoring in the bottom of the second with a leadoff two-bagger. The Fayetteville catcher advanced to third base on a wild pitch and scored on a balk from FredNats starter Pablo Aldonis.
Fayetteville starter Trey Dombroski stranded six runners over three scoreless innings to start his day before surrendering an RBI single to Brenner Cox in the top of the fourth that tied things at 1-1. Dombroski completed four innings and struck out three in the no-decision before turning the ball over to Nolan DeVos.
The Nationals jumped out to a 3-1 lead against DeVos with RBI singles from Armando Cruz and Sammy Infante. DeVos pitched through the seventh, struck out three, and handed off to Walker Brockhouse who provided a scoreless eight inning of relief work.
In the seventh inning, Zach Cole sparked a come-from-behind rally with a leadoff home run over the center field batter's eye that cut the game to 3-2. Cole, who hit a grand slam on Saturday, became the first Fayetteville hitter with multiple home runs and drove in seven runs over the final two games of the series.
With two outs and no one on base, Fredericksburg reliever Brian Sanchez struggled to find the zone and walked four straight hitters, including Ryan Clifford with the bases loaded to tie it at 3-3.
Fayetteville grabbed the lead back in the eighth inning following hits from Gaston and Cole that placed runners on the corners. Miguel Gomez (W, 1-0) attempted to pick Cole off of first and threw wildly beyond his first baseman. The errant throw allowed Gaston to freely stroll home for a 4-3 lead and set up Ian Foggo for a save chance in the bottom of the ninth.
Foggo (L, 0-1) hit a batter and walked a batter, but still managed to pick up a pair of outs before facing Thomas, who pulled a one-strike pitch into the left field bullpen for the lead. In the bottom of the ninth inning, Christian Ciuffetelli (SV, 2) closed the game to seal Fredericksburg's lone win of the series.
The Woodpeckers hit the road for the first time on Tuesday, with a six-game series against the Columbia Fireflies (Single-A Royals) in Columbia, SC. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 PM.
