
Kannapolis Holds off Delmarva to Win Series

SALISBURY, MD: The Delmarva Shorebirds (4-5) fell just short in the final game of the series against the Kannapolis Cannon Ballers (5-3) by a score of 5-4 on Sunday afternoon.
Kannapolis manufactured the first run of the game in the opening inning on a fielder's choice off the bat of Chris Lanzilli scored Jordan Sprinkle to make it 1-0 Cannon Ballers.
The lead would grow to 3-0 in the second on a two-run double by Sprinkle as Victor Torres and Wilber Sanchez each touched home.
In the third, the Shorebirds got on the board on a solo home run by Maxwell Costes as his first professional homer made it a 3-1 game. They'd add on in the inning on a long double by Samuel Basallo to score Jackson Holliday, cutting the Kannapolis lead to 3-2.
Delmarva tied the game in the next inning on the fourth home run of the season by Creed Willems as his third bomb of the series knotted the game up at three.
The Cannon Ballers quickly regained the lead on a solo homer of their own with Troy Claunch belting one over the left field wall for his career home run, putting Kannapolis back in front 4-3.
It would remain 4-3 into the seventh but the Cannon Ballers added to their lead with a two-out, RBI single by Logan Glass to make it a 5-3 game.
The Shorebirds would get that run back in the bottom half of the frame on a run-scoring hit by Jackson Holliday that trimmed the deficit back down to one as Carter Young came home.
In the final inning, Delmarva produced a late threat by putting runners at first and second with two outs, but Anderson De Los Santos bounced back to the pitcher Emerson Talavera to end the game with Kannapolis winning the game 5-4, earning them a series win.
Manuel Veloz (1-0) was the victor in relief for Kannapolis with Wyatt Cheney (0-1) taking the loss for the Shorebirds, Emerson Talavera (1) picked up the save by recording the final two outs.
Eight of the nine Shorebirds in the starting lineup registered a hit with Samuel Basallo picking up two, including his RBI double in the third. Maxwell Costes and Creed Willems each hit solo home runs in the game and Jackson Holliday reached base twice with an RBI and two stolen bases.
The Shorebirds will now look ahead to their next series on the road against the Fredericksburg Nationals starting on Tuesday night at 7:05 p.m. from Virginia Credit Union Stadium.
