Carolina Mudcats News Release

LYNCHBURG, VA - Lynchburg's Dorsyss Paulino was 3-for-4 with two runs and Joe Sever drove in two while going 2-for-4 and the Hillcats escaped with a 5-4 win against the Mudcats on Sunday afternoon at Calvin Falwell Field. Reed Harper was 2-for-3 with two RBI in the loss for Carolina.

The Mudcats (70-68, 36-33) led only once in Sunday's loss in Lynchburg. They fell behind after the Hillcats (72-67, 39-30) rallied for an early run off starter Blair Walters in the second, but later took the lead in the third. Lynchburg jumped ahead again in the fourth, but the Mudcats tied it up in the sixth before the Hillcats scored the go-ahead and final run in the seventh.

Walters worked through the sixth and left with the game tied 4-4. He allowed four runs and nine hits over six and did not earn a decision. Carolina's lefty also walked two and struck out three in his final start of the 2015 season. Walters finished the year at 6-8 with a 3.13 ERA over 22 starts and 29 games.

Reliever Andy Otero allowed Lynchburg's go-ahead run in the seventh and suffered the loss. Otero (L, 1-5, 2.58) retired the first two he faced in the seventh before allowing a two out double to Paulino and a RBI single to Sever.

Lynchburg's Perci Garner allowed the Mudcats to tie the game in the sixth and was charged with a blown save. Garner (W, 3-1, 2.93) stayed in for a scoreless seventh and part of the eighth and earned the win after the Hillcats broke the tie in the seventh. Garner allowed two runs on three hits and struck out five in the game.

LeVon Washington drove in the first run of the game with a RBI double in the second off Walters. The Mudcats later answered back with a two run third to take the lead against Lynchburg's Mitch Brown. Their 2-1 lead was short lived though as Lynchburg went ahead again with a two-run double from Yhoxian Medina in the fourth.

Harper later tied the game with a two run single to center in the sixth. Carolina lost the 4-4 tie in the seventh when Otero allowed the go-ahead run on a two-out RBI single from Sever.

Otero pitched the seventh and eighth and took the loss. He allowed just one run and two hits over two innings and struck out two.

Brown started for the Hillcats and managed to get through just the first two before leaving in the third. He walked five, struck out two and allowed two runs on two hits over two innings pitched. Justin Brantley replaced Brown in the third and allowed one of three inherited runners to score. In all, Brantley pitched through three scoreless and allowed one hit while striking out one.

The loss dropped Carolina behind in the series and put the Hillcats up two games to one. Seth Webster is scheduled to start for the Mudcats in Monday's season finale at 2:00 p.m. in Lynchburg.
