WILMINGTON, DE. (SEPTEMBER 6, 2015) - Right-hander Daury Torrez returned from the disabled list on Sunday to guide the Myrtle Beach Pelicans, Class A-Advanced affiliate of the Chicago Cubs, to a 4-1 win over the Wilmington Blue Rocks at Frawley Stadium. Torrez finished with six innings in the book and picked up his tenth win of the season.

Myrtle Beach (81-56, 40-28 second half) took a quick three-run lead in the top of the first. With one out, Mark Zagunis was hit by a pitch and then stole second base. Ben Carhart then singled to center field to put runners on the corners. With Victor Caratini at the plate, Wilmington starter Pedro Fernandez uncorked a wild pitch that allowed Zagunis to score the go-ahead run. With the Pelicans leading 1-0, Caratini smashed an RBI double to right field and Jeffrey Baez followed with an RBI single to right to put the Birds in front, 3-0.

The Blue Rocks (61-77, 23-45 second half) stranded a man in scoring position in the first but scratched a run across in the bottom of the second. Center fielder Dominique Taylor pulled a two-out single to left, and left fielder Alfredo Escalera clubbed an RBI double to the right-center field wall to cut the lead to 3-1.

With the Pelicans leading 3-1 in the fourth, a two out walk and a double put two Blue Rocks in scoring position, but Torrez struck out right-fielder Logan Moon swinging to end the threat.

The score remained the same until the top of the eighth. With one out, Jason Vosler dropped a single into right-center field and took second base on a fielding error by Moon. Carhart then crushed an RBI double to the left-center field gap to drive in Vosler and cap the scoring at 4-1.

Torrez (10-6), who had not pitched since August 27, also against the Blue Rocks, struck out just one batter to go along with three walks on Sunday. In all, he allowed one run, earned, on four base hits. He picked up the victory, his tenth of the year, which ties him with eight other players in ninth place for the most wins in a single season in Pelicans history.

Left-hander Michael Heesch took over in relief of Torrez in the bottom of the seventh and surrendered a one-out walk and a single. However Heesch shut down the Blue Rocks in the inning with back-to-back strikeouts to preserve the 4-1 Pelicans lead.

The bullpen combination of David Berg and Jasvir Rakkar worked scoreless eighth and ninth innings, respectively. Rakkar surrendered a leadoff single in the bottom of the ninth but struck out a man before inducing a game-ending ground ball double play to seal the 4-1 win. It was his sixteenth save of the season, good for the second-most in the Carolina League.

Fernandez (0-6) worked five innings and took the loss. He allowed three runs, all earned, on seven hits. The right-hander fanned five men, walked none, and hit a batter.

The Pelicans face the Blue Rocks in the final game of the regular season on Monday. Right-hander Tyler Skulina (3-5, 3.07) gets the nod for Myrtle Beach, and the Blue Rocks will go with right-hander Jakob Junis (4-11, 3.74). The first pitch from Frawley Stadium is set for 1:05 p.m. ET.

The game can be heard live on 1450 WRNN-AM ESPN Myrtle Beach, on the TuneIn Radio App, and via the MiLB First Pitch App, beginning with the Pregame Show at 1:15 p.m. ET. Click here for a current schedule of the Pelicans final regular season games.
