Winston-Salem Dash News Release
FREDERICK, Md. (Sept. 6, 2015) - Behind stellar pitching from Jordan Guerrero and James Dykstra, Winston-Salem nipped Frederick 1-0 on Sunday night from Nymeo Field at Harry Grove Stadium. This victory guaranteed that Winston-Salem will post the best record in a half during the Dash era, which began in 2009.
The Dash (44-23, 74-63) submitted their worst half since the nickname change to begin this season, but the club has mustered a remarkable second-half turnaround. Winston-Salem boasts a league-best 44-23 (.657) mark in half two, which will be better than the Dash's previous high-water mark, a 44-25 (.638) showing in the first half in 2012.
A big key to Winston-Salem's recent success has been its play in close games, and the club moved to a CL-leading 17-3 in one-run contests since the All-Star break. The Dash plated the game's lone run in the fifth when Omar Narvaez scored on a two-out wild pitch.
This proved to be enough for Guerrero (7-3) and Dykstra. The former whiffed seven of the first eight men he retired and blanked the Keys over five and two-thirds innings. Guerrero, who was making his second start since a nine-day stint on the disabled list, is 5-0 with a 1.65 ERA in his last seven outings.
Dykstra escaped a minor jam in the sixth before leaving a runner on base in the seventh and eighth. Frederick's lone true scoring threat came about in the ninth, but Dykstra overcame a pair of walks and an error to strand the bases loaded by inducing a game-ending groundout off the bat of Adrian Marin. In the process, Dykstra collected his first Minor League save.
In all, Frederick amassed just four hits and only pushed one runner past second base. On this road trip, Winston-Salem has surrendered 11 runs in the first six games.
Keys starter John Means (0-3) recorded his first High-A quality start, but he suffered the loss after tossing six innings of one-run ball. Relievers Nik Nowottnick and Ronan Pacheco held the Dash off the board for the final three frames.
The regular season comes to a close on Monday at 2 p.m. from Maryland. Winston-Salem will send prospect righty Spencer Adams (2-0, 2.70 ERA) to the mound against southpaw Mitch Horacek (7-16, 4.64 ERA). Pregame coverage begins at 1:45 p.m. on wsdash.com/broadcast and the TuneIn App.
The #PlayoffDash will begin Wednesday night at BB&T Ballpark with Game 1 of the Southern Division Championship Series against the Myrtle Beach Pelicans, the CL affiliate of the Chicago Cubs. Tickets are available by calling the Dash at (336) 714-6875 or visiting wsdash.com. Follow along with all of the action via #PlayoffDash Central.
