Myrtle Beach Pelicans News Release
WILMINGTON, DE - The Myrtle Beach Pelicans, Class A-Advanced affiliate of the Chicago Cubs, split their doubleheader with the Wilmington Blue Rocks at Frawley Stadium on Saturday, winning game one 4-2 before falling 6-2 in the second game.
Myrtle Beach (80-56, 39-28 second half) took an early lead in the top of the first inning of game one. With one out, Pin-Chieh Chen doubled to left field, and two batters later, Jason Vosler lined an RBI single to right field to put the Birds on top, 1-0.
However the Blue Rocks (61-76, 23-44 second half) would take the lead against Pelicans starter Jen-Ho Tseng in the bottom of the inning. A leadoff walk and a bunt single put two men aboard for third baseman Mauricio Ramos, who hammered a two-run double to left field that gave Wilmington a 2-1 lead. Tseng went on to retire the side with a fly out and two strikeouts. The runs for the Blue Rocks snapped a 27-inning scoreless drought for their offense.
However those were the only two runs that the Blue Rocks would muster against Tseng.
Trailing 2-1 in the fifth, the Pelicans rallied for three runs to take the lead. Gleyber Torres led off the fifth inning with a single to left field and scored when Daniel Lockhart launched a game-tying double to right field. Chesny Young followed with a walk, and Chen laid down a sacrifice bunt to put both runners into scoring position. Two batters later, Vosler blooped a two-run RBI single into left field, and both runners scored to put the Birds ahead for good, 4-2.
That was all the scoring the Birds would need. Tseng (7-7) finished his night with two runs allowed, both earned, on four hits across five innings of work en route to the win.
Right-hander Josh Conway pitched the final two frames in relief. After a perfect sixth inning, Conway allowed a leadoff single in the seventh, but he struck out a batter and induced a game-ending ground ball double play to seal his third save of the year and the 4-2 Pelicans win.
Blue Rocks starter Zach Lovvorn (4-5) took the loss and allowed four runs, all earned, on eight hits in five innings of work. He walked two and struck out four in a losing effort.
Right-hander Jeremy Null took the mound for the Pelicans in the second game of the double dip and pitched a perfect first inning. However, in the second, the Blue Rocks sent nine men to the plate as part of a four-run inning to take the lead. Three consecutive singles loaded the bases, and second baseman Humberto Arteaga opened the scoring with a two-run, infield single that nicked off of Vosler's glove at third base. A walk loaded the bases once more, and center fielder Logan Moon lined a two-run single up the middle that gave the Blue Rocks a 4-0 lead. Null would work out of the inning with a pair of strikeouts and a fly out.
The Birds put three baserunners on through the first three innings with a pair of walks and a fielder's choice, but they did not have a hit until the fourth. Vosler reached second on a throwing error by Blue Rocks shortstop Jack Lopez to lead off the inning. Ben Carhart then lined a two-run home run to left field for the first Pelicans hit, cutting Wilmington's lead to 4-2.
Outside of Carhart's homer, the Birds offense was quiet in game two. Young laid down a two-out bunt single in the fifth, but that was the only other Pelicans hit for the rest of the night.
Blue Rocks starter Ashton Goudeau held the Birds to just two hits in the second leg of the doubleheader. Goudeau (6-4) picked up the win with a six-inning effort, allowing two runs, one earned, while walking two and fanning six.
Estarlin Cordero struck out the side in the seventh to finish off the 6-2 win for the Blue Rocks.
Null (2-3) was saddled with the loss. He allowed six runs, all earned, on eleven hits across five innings of work. The tall right-hander also surrendered a pair of walks, while striking out five.
With the split doubleheader, the Birds are now 13-9 in doubleheader games this season; while Wilmington is 4-10.
The Pelicans face the Blue Rocks in the penultimate game of the regular season on Sunday. Right-hander Daury Torrez (9-6, 3.86) will take the ball for Myrtle Beach, and the Blue Rocks will send right-hander Pedro Fernandez (0-5, 9.43) to the mound.
