Mudcats Held to Two Hits Again in Loss to Wood Ducks

KINSTON, N.C. - The Carolina Mudcats were held to just two hits for the second straight night while falling to the Down East Wood Ducks 5-1 on Wednesday night at Grainger Stadium in Kinston, N.C. The loss was Carolina's fourth straight overall and second in their series against the Wood Ducks.
The Mudcats (1-4, 34-34) were held scoreless in the game through the eighth before Jesus Parra singled and scored on a groundout in the ninth. Parra's hit was Carolina's second of the game, their first came in the third from Hedbert Perez.
The game was scoreless through the third before the Wood Ducks (4-1, 41-25) broke through with three runs in the fourth on a Cam Cauley RBI double and an Ian Moller two-run home run. Down East added two more in the eighth on a double steal and a Danyer Cueva RBI double.
Will Rudy started for the Mudcats and allowed the three fourth inning runs while also pitching through six full innings. Rudy's six inning start was the longest of this career and a new season-high for a Carolina pitcher. In all Rudy (L, 3-2) allowed four hits and struck out four. He also allowed a home run for the fifth straight outing.
Reliever Jesus Rivero allowed the two Down East runs in the eighth in what was his Carolina League debut. Rivero allowed three hits, walked one and struck out three over two innings.
The game was played in just one hour and :42 minutes, making it three minutes shorter than the previous game played on Tuesday night. At one hour and :42 minutes, Wednesday's game was Carolina's shortest nine-inning game of the 2023 season.
