Five Extra-Base Hits Push Pelicans Over RiverDogs 6-1
June 29, 2023 - Carolina League (CarL)
Myrtle Beach Pelicans News Release
For the second night in a row, the Myrtle Beach Pelicans defeated the Charleston RiverDogs with six runs and 12 hits in a 6-1 Thursday night win. Their second win in a row moves the Birds to a 42-38 overall record and 3-2 in the second half. The RiverDogs fell to 29-42 and 2-3 in the second half.
It was a great night at the plate for Andy Garriola (3-4, 3 2B) as he hit three doubles and scored two runs. Garriola hit three extra-base hits for the second time this season, the only Pelicans' player to tally that number. Parker Chavers (2-4, HR, RBI) hit a solo home run and extended his on-base streak to 17 games. Rafael Morel (1-2, 2 RBI, 2 BB) and David Avitia (1-4, 2B, 2 RBI) each pushed two more runs across the plate in the win.
In arguably his best outing of the season, Koen Moreno (3-2) tossed four innings of one-run baseball off two hits and one walk while striking out a pair out of the bullpen. Starter Drew Gray pitched three shutout innings with four strikeouts in his Pelicans' debut.
Three of the five RiverDogs' hits were extra as Chandler Simpson (1-4, RBI) brought home the only run on a sacrifice RBI bunt and stole two bases. Charleston left eight runners on base and went 0-for-12 with runners in scoring position.
Starter Alex Ayala Jr. (0-4) took the loss after allowing two earned runs in two innings. The Pelicans worked his pitch count up to 58 in those two innings and smacked four hits. Kikito Severino sacrificed three more earned runs in 2 2/3 innings out of the bullpen.
Unlike last night, the Pelicans wasted no time to score as they plated two in the first. With two outs and the bases loaded, Morel lined a single to left that scored two for an early 2-0 lead.
Two more runs came home in the bottom of the fourth as Avitia drilled a two-run double to the right-center field gap to extend the Birds' lead to 4-0.
Charleston's only run came in the top of the fifth as Simpson put down a bunt with Jhon Diaz on third. Simpson was thrown out at first as Diaz came home and beat the throw home for the RiverDogs' first run.
Myrtle Beach added a run in the fifth and sixth innings to lengthen the lead. With two outs in the bottom of the fifth and runners on the corners, Morel attempted to steal second and got caught in a rundown. Garriola came home to score from third before Morel was tagged out to end the inning.
On the third pitch of the bottom of the sixth, Chavers pulled his seventh home run of the year to right field for a solo home run to push the lead to 6-1.
Angel Gonzalez struck out three in the top of the ninth to end it.
Myrtle Beach and Charleston will continue the series on Friday at 7:05 p.m. It's the first game of Red, White, and Blue weekend at Pelicans Ballpark.
