Wichita Thunder News Release
WICHITA, KS- The Wichita Thunder fell 6-2 to the Bossier-Shreveport Mudbugs at the Kansas Coliseum on Friday night. The Mudbugs got off to a quick start, scoring three times within the game's first 12 minutes. Brett Smith's clean faceoff win went right into the hands of Simon Mangos who launched a shot that rang under the crossbar at 5:34 to give the Mudbugs a 1-0 lead. Less than a minute later, Dave Pszenyczny converted a power play chance when he scored on a backdoor slapshot on a pass from Travis Clayton at 6:20. Shortly after the Mudbugs' second goal, Chris Kovalcik dropped the gloves with Bossier-Shreveport's James DeLory. Tyrel Lucas made it 3-0 at the 11:28 marker in the first, also scoring on a backdoor pass.
The Thunder cut into the lead at 6:19 in the second period. Brent Ottmann slid the puck across the slot for defenseman Jason Woll who jumped into the offensive play near the crease. Woll then buried the puck to the left of John DeCaro. Bossier-Shreveport re-extended its lead 30 seconds later when DeLory scored on Mark Johnson's pass to the right side of the crease.
The Thunder scored its second goal of the night at 9:35 to pull within 4-2. Jay Henderson collected a loose puck down the right boards, beat his defender, and then snapped a shot past DeCaro's right. The Thunder survived a five-minute Mudbugs' power play at the end of the period following an altercation between Chris McAllister and Mark Johnson. Despite both players dropping their gloves, referee Ryan Hersey only charged McAllister with a fighting major which resulted in the long power play.
The Mudbugs put the game away with two scores in the third period. Jeff Kyrzakos found the back of the net at 10:29 for Bossier's fifth goal of the game. Joe Ori tapped in a rebound on the right of the net after Tim Boron made an acrobatic save on the left.
Boron, playing for the first time since October 30th, was touched for six goals while facing 31 total shots. John DeCaro saved 18 of 20 for the win. Wichita was 0 for 5 on the power play while the Mudbugs were 1 for 4.
The Thunder and Mudbugs finish their weekend series Saturday night. Opening faceoff at the Coliseum is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. For tickets, call the Thunder office at (316) 264-GOAL.
