Bossier-Shreveport Mudbugs News Release

WICHITA, KS - The Bossier-Shreveport Mudbugs extended their winning streak to a season-best four straight games with a 6-2 victory over the Wichita Thunder Friday night at the Kansas Coliseum. The Mudbugs improved to 13-10-0 on the season with the win, which was their 11th straight over Wichita in the regular season.

Bossier-Shreveport jumped out to a 3-0 first period lead and killed off all five Thunder powerplays to help maintain it. Brett Smith contributed three assists in the game and Simon Mangos had a goal and an assist as six different Mudbugs found the back of the net.

The Mudbugs took control early on in this one, outshooting Wichita 16-4 in the first period and taking a 3-0 lead in the first 20 minutes. Mangos started it off for the ‘Bugs, wristing home a long shot right off a faceoff win by Brett Smith to make it 1-0. Just 44 seconds later on the powerplay, Smith sent a pass into the slot to Dave Pszenyczny, who beat Tim Boron stick-side to put Bossier-Shreveport up 2-0. Later in the period, Tyrel Lucas set up in the slot and fired a quick shot off the crossbar and into the net off a centering feed from Justin Aikins and the Mudbugs led 3-0 after one.

Wichita battled back in the second period, getting on the scoreboard when Jason Woll put a back-door feed past John DeCaro at 6:19. The ‘Bugs answered back exactly 30 seconds later as Mark Johnson set up James DeLory at the goal mouth, where he jammed home his first professional goal to give the Mudbugs a 4-1 lead. Jay Henderson cut into the lead again midway through the period with an unassisted tally that made it a 4-2 game.

Jeff Kyrzakos added to the lead midway through the third period with a pretty goal as he caught the puck on his backhand and weaved around a defender to his forehand before firing it past Boron to put the ‘Bugs on top 5-2. Joe Ori capped off the win with his first goal of the season, tucking the rebound of a David Rutherford chance into the net to provide the final 6-2 margin.

John DeCaro stopped 18 of 20 shots to earn his eighth win of the season. Making his first start since October 30, Tim Boron made 25 saves in defeat. The ‘Bugs outshot the Thunder 31-20 and finished 1 for 4 on the powerplay.

The teams will meet again tomorrow night at 7:05 pm at the Kansas Coliseum as the Mudbugs look for a sweep in the second game of a back-to-back set. Pregame coverage will get underway at 6:45 pm on News Radio 710 AM KEEL and the game will also be shown live on CHL TV.
