Bossier-Shreveport Mudbugs News Release
BOSSIER CITY, LA - The Bossier-Shreveport Mudbugs defeated the Corpus Christi IceRays 5-1 on Friday night at CenturyTel Center in a game that featured a near bench-clearing brawl late in the second period and a total of nearly 300 penalty minutes.
With the Mudbugs on top 5-0 late in the second, Corpus Christi's Nicolas Bachand delivered a hard check to Mudbugs goaltender Ken Carroll, setting off a melee that resulted in over 200 minutes in penalties and 13 player ejections at the 15:34 mark of the period. After a delay of nearly 45 minutes while the officials sorted out the penalties, play resumed and the Mudbugs finished off the victory with just 10 skaters in the game.
The Mudbugs struck first in the contest during a 4-on-4 situation with Todd Paul's second goal in as many games. J.J. Martin skated into the offensive zone and found Paul in the high slot for an open wrist shot that beat Dustin Traylen just over five minutes into the contest to make it 1-0 Bugs. Just over two minutes later, the Mudbugs extended the lead to 2-0 when Joe Blaznek held a puck in at the blue line and fed Travis Clayton in the slot. Clayton backhanded a perfect pass across to Tyrel Lucas, who beat Traylen top shelf for his 11th goal of the year. The Bugs had a 12-9 shot advantage and a 2-0 lead after one period.
Brett Smith's powerplay goal from the left wing boards made it 3-0 early in the third, and was followed by Dale Lupul's wrist shot from the point a minute and a half later that gave the Mudbugs a 4-0 lead. Later in the period, Neil Clark's shorthanded breakaway goal made it 5-0 Mudbugs just prior to the brawl.
4:26 was added on to the third period when play resumed, and the IceRays' Mike Zbriger scored the only goal of the third as the Mudbugs finished off the 5-1 win.
Ken Carroll earned the win in goal with 11 saves before he was ejected for fighting Corpus Christi's Kris Tebbs, who was also removed from the contest. The Mudbugs outshot the IceRays 33-26 and went 1 for 5 on the powerplay, while Corpus was 0 for 6.
