Saint John Sea Dogs News Release
SAINT JOHN - The calendar has turned to December, which means "Movember" is over and it's time to tally the results.
Players and staff of the Saint John Sea Dogs grew moustaches throughout the month of November in support of men's health and prostate cancer research. The team solicited donations throughout the month, amassing nearly $2,000 towards the cause. Sea Dogs Chairman and CEO Scott McCain matched that amount Thursday, bringing the total to nearly $4,000.
"As a male in my 50s, I'm mindful of the importance of raising awareness and funds for men's health," McCain said. "I'm proud to be able to match the donations raised by players and staff. My congratulations go out to them for their efforts to support of this very important initiative."
To encourage the players to "grow their mo's" and solicit donations, the team awarded prizes for the best and worst moustaches, as well as the top fundraiser as of 11:59 p.m. Wednesday.
Stephen MacAulay earned the top fundraiser award with a total of $490 at midnight, although donations continue to roll in for Jonathan Huberdeau, who has since passed his fellow forward.
Meanwhile, fans on the team's Facebook and Twitter pages decided overwhelmingly to recognize defenceman Spencer MacDonald for having the best moustache, while goaltender Mathieu Corbeil earned the ignominious distinction of the worst.
MacAulay, MacDonald and Corbeil will all receive prizes from the team for their efforts.
The Sea Dogs also helped promote another community cause this week, making a donation to the Raising the Roof campaign to fight youth homelessness.
The team purchased red toques for players, coaches and staff, and posed for photos wearing the distinctive headwear, which is being sold to raise money for the Saint John Youth House project.
"Connecting with our community has always been important to the Sea Dogs, and this is another worthy cause we are happy to support," said Sea Dogs President Wayne Long. "We hope people will see our players, coaches and staff wearing these red toques and support the Raising the Roof cause themselves."
Toques can be purchased at the Human Development Council on the 3rd floor of the City Market, or go to http://www.raisingtheroof.org/ to order online.
The Dogs are back at home Saturday against the Shawinigan Cataractes (7 p.m.) and Sunday against the Chicoutimi Sagueneens (3 p.m.) Tickets are available at the Harbour Station box office, by calling 506-657-1234 or online at www.tickets.harbourstation.ca.
The entire Canadian Hockey League participated in Movember this season and raised nearly $125,000. Funds raised are directed to programs run by Movember and men's health partner, Prostate Cancer Canada.
