Moreno hits walk-off to end Blacksnakes night

May 26, 2006 - American Association (AA) - Sioux City Explorers News Release

Sioux City, IA: Jorge Moreno smashed a full count offering from former Explorer JC Huguet over the left-field fence for a three run walk off homer here tonight. The Explorers rallied from down 3-1 in the ninth to get the win and break a five game losing streak with the win over the St. Joe Blacksnakes.

The X's struck first with a run in the bottom of the first when Ryan Ruiz double to open the inning and later scored on a Kevin Henry triple to right field. That was all the X's would get off St. Joe starter Donovan Graves as he threw an outstanding 8.0 innings allowing only one run on five hits.

Sioux City starter Karsten Gaarder was also impressive working 5.2 innings and allowing 2 runs on six hits. The first run Gaarder would allow came in the 3rd inning when Scooter Jordan scored on a Mark Burke RBI groundout. The Blacksnakes would take a 2-1 lead in the sixth on a Ben Thomas double that scored Jake Whitesides.

After adding another run in the seventh, St. Joe looked to have the game in control when closer JC Huguet entered the game in the ninth. The inning started off with walks to Julius Thames and Dan Meier but Huguet buckled down to get Kevin Henry to strikeout for the first out. Jorge Moreno then followed and blasted his fourth homer of the year to end the game.

The X's and Blacksnakes will play game two of this four game series tomorrow here at Lewis & Clark Park with first pitch coming at 7:05 pm.
