Saltdogs Starter Strikes Out Nine

Lincoln, NE - The Sioux Falls Canaries (4-10) were shutout on Friday night by Lincoln Saltdog starter Jeff Blitstein. Blitstein threw a complete game shutout allowing eight hits and no walks while striking out nine.

The Saltdogs (11-3) took advantage of a hit batsman to get on the board in the bottom of the third inning. Jose Torres reached after being hit by the pitch. He advanced to second base on a single by Bryan Warner and scored on a single by Pichi Balet for the 1-0 lead.

In the fourth inning the Saltdogs added a pair. Brett Cooley doubled and scored on a single by Paul Powell to put Lincoln in front 2-0. Jay Yaconetti followed with a double to score Powell making it 3-0 after four innings.

The Saltdogs would pull even further ahead late in the game. In the seventh inning, Josh Patton singled and scored on a single by Cooley. In the eighth inning, Yaconetti reached on a two-base throwing error by Kyle Kmiecik and scored on a single by Cory Harris for the 5-0 final.

While Blitstein (1-0) picked up the win, Matt Petrusek (0-2) took the loss. Petrusek allowed three runs on eight hits in 5.1 innings of work.

The Canaries and Saltdogs will meet again on Saturday night at 7:05 p.m. The Canaries return home to the Birdcage on Wednesday, when they will host the Sioux City Explorers for Truth or D.A.R.E. night presented by Wellmark Blue Cross and Blue Shield.
