Mooseheads Shut Out Isles 7-0

Halifax, NS - The Charlottetown Islanders were blanked by the Halifax Mooseheads 7-0 in the second half of a back-to-back.

Aksels Ozols started for the first time in two weeks and for the second time in a row in Halifax. Carter Bickle would end up relieving him early.

The Mooseheads' power play was strong tonight going 3/7.

Moose pounced early, 3-0 after one

Halifax was quick to the offensive end. Dylan MacKinnon tested Ozols early, but he started strong.

Ozols continued his strong start, stopping Jake Todd and Liam Kilfoil in tight.

Will Allen had a chance of his own, trying to go high-glove side but Mooseheads' netminder Matthis Rousseau turned it aside.

Then, the Mooseheads broke through.

MacKinnon scored the game winning goal 5:24 into the first period with a shot from the point through traffic that found its way past Bickle to open the scoring.

Then, Reynolds was wide open in the slot and was fed a pass. He made no mistake on the shot, burying his 23rd of the season to give Halifax a 2-0 lead early.

Then, just over four minutes later, Lou Lévesque added a third, picking the short-side corner, ending Ozols' night in goal.

Bickle stopped the two other shots faced in the opening frame.

Halifax was leading in shots after the first 9-3.

Isles allow one in second

Cole Huckins was sent to the box for roughing four minutes into the middle stanza, and Halifax made the Isles pay.

Matthieu Cataford scored his 33rd of the season while a man up, taking a feed from the corner to extend their lead to 4-0.

Not long after, the Isles would get a chance on the man advantage after a Reynolds tripping penalty.

Charlottetown tried to get back in the game as Owen Conrad and Simon Hughes each had chances, but Rousseau turned them away, and Halifax killed the penalty.

Cataford then went to the box for tripping, giving the Isles another chance to bring the game closer before the intermission.

They couldn't convert while on the power play and Markus Vidicek was able to get in alone with Bickle shorthanded, but Bickle won the battle.

Conrad would take a penalty for unsportsmanlike conduct late in the period and the Mooseheads cycled the puck around until the clock ran out.

Halifax pulls away in third

Once again the Isles found themselves in trouble to open the period. Halifax' fourth line went to work and just 2:56 into the third. Liam Welsh scored his first of the season to bring their lead to 5-0.

Kyle Powers tried to come back the other way with a chance, but Rousseau said no.

Bickle then made a spectacular glove save to deny Cataford his 34th of the year.

Hughes would be sent to the penalty box for a double-minor for unsportsmanlike conduct and interference.

Once again, the Mooseheads capitalised.

Jake Furlong scored his third of the year with a shot from distance that beat Bickle to make it 6-0.

Halifax added one more as Jan Sprynar joined in on the action to make the final score 7-0 in favour of the Mooseheads.

Bickle stopped 26 of 30 shots in relief for Ozols who stopped four of seven. Charlottetown only managed to gather 13 shots as opposed to Halifax' 37.

The Isles hit the ice next on Saturday, Feb. 17th as they take on the Blainville-Boisbriand Armada in their first meeting of the season. Puck drop at the Eastlink Centre is at 7 p.m.
