Moose, RRC team up to "Respond to Reading"

Manitoba Moose News Release
The Manitoba Moose, in partnership with Red River College, are pleased to announce they have developed a new reading program designed to positively encourage children in grades kindergarten to five to develop their interest in reading. Moose forwards Ryan Shannon and Milan Gajic kicked off the program today by visiting the Grade Four class at Hastings School.
Each year, as part of the "I Love to Read Program", the Moose have received numerous requests each year from teachers soliciting Moose players to read and interact with their respective class. This season, we are pleased to offer a program that allows Winnipeg elementary schools to qualify for this opportunity while encouraging the students to actively participate in the program themselves. Classes can qualify by:
- e-mailing Kelly McArthur, Director of Community Partnerships, Manitoba Moose at kmcarthur@moosehockey.com and signing up their class to participate in the program.
- Implementing the "Respond to Reading" workbook corresponding to their respective grade level.
- As part of the program, students must read a book of their choice, and in turn, complete their respective workbook.
- Once all workbooks are completed by their class, as well as a Teacher's Report, an explanation as to why a Manitoba Moose player should visit their class should also be submitted by fax to 204-926-5555 by February 11/08 at 4:30 p.m.
- All participating classes will be entered into a draw to have two Moose players visit their class on Tuesday, February 26/08. The players will read "The Bully" by Winnipeg author Rita Y. Toews to the class. The book addresses the issue of bullies in the school and gives helpful suggestions to children on how to deal with the stressful situation in a positive manner. A total of eight classes will be selected.
- In addition to the player visits, each participating class will also have the opportunity to win one of many possible prize packages from the Manitoba Moose and Red River College.
If you require additional information on this customized reading program, please contact Kelly McArthur at 204-926-5521.
Moose fans can get individual tickets to all Manitoba Moose games by calling the Moose ticket office at 987-7825 or by going online at www.moosehockey.com.
