Manitoba Moose News Release

Road sweet road?

It seems like all the Moose needed to right their current mini-slump was another chance to get back on the road.

The Manitoba Moose made the most of their chance to make amends with a 3-1 victory at St. John's Monday night. Alex Auld stopped 25 of 26 shots to earn the victory.

For the second time in as many games, and for only the second time this season, the Moose scored first. Justin Morrison picked up a Tomas Mojzis rebound and put it in the net 6:30 into the opening period to make it 1-0.

After the first period, St. John's held a 13-8 edge in shots but the Moose were up 1-0.

Early in the second, Alex Auld stretched the rule book as he touched the puck in behind the goal line but outside of the protected area. The result was a two-minute delay-of-game penalty that the Moose were able to kill off.

Midway through the middle frame, Wade Brookbank and Marc Moro dropped the gloves as relations between the two teams began to heat up.

The game remained 1-0 heading into the third period. The Moose carried most of the play in the middle frame, outshooting the Leafs 9-6. Overall, the shot count was 19-17.

The Moose found themselves in a similar position to Saturday with a one-goal lead going into the third. However, this time around they were able to carry the play throughout the final frame outshooting the opposition 13-7.

Lee Goren scored on the powerplay at the 8:55 mark to double the Moose lead to 2-0. Goren's goal was assisted by Peter Sarno and Kevin Bieksa.

19 seconds later, former Moose Brad Leeb scored to bring the hosts back to within a goal. Leeb's blast came from the top of the left faceoff circle just inside the far post.

The Leafs pressed for the equalizer but Manitoba put it away after Tomas Mojzis wristed a shot from the far blueline that managed to find its way into the open cage with 25 seconds to go.

NOTES: Joe DiPenta was a scratch tonight, as Johanathan Aitken found his way back into the lineup... Alex Auld's delay-of-game penalty for touching the puck behind the goal line was the fourth such minor called so far this season in the league but first in a game involving the Moose.
