Binghamton Senators News Release
LAST WEEK: The Binghamton Senators defeated Hershey and Hamilton at home before falling on the road to Bridgeport on Sunday. The victory against the Hamilton Bulldogs on Saturday was the team's third consecutive home victory.
FRIDAY OCT. 22nd vs. HERSHEY (3-2 W): Winger PAT KAVANAGH scored his first goal as a member of the Binghamton Senators at 6:43 of the first period. KAVANAGH tied for the team lead with 23 goals last season as a member of the Manitoba Moose. But Hershey would take the lead after two periods on goals by forward RYAN STEEVES and defenseman JOHNNY BOYCHUK. Center CHARLIE STEPHENS and left wing DENIS HAMEL would ensure that Binghamton would not lose on home ice with a pair of third period goals. DENIS HAMEL'S goal at 9:50 of the third period was his twentieth game-winning goal in his American Hockey League career. RAY EMERY picked up his second win of the season making 31 saves on 33 shots. Binghamton was 0 for 4 on the power play while Hershey was 1 for 6. The B-Sens took a season-high 39 shots while Hershey had 33.
SATURDAY OCT. 23rd vs. HAMILTON (2-1 W ot): Binghamton played into overtime for the first time this season and won on center JASON SPEZZA'S goal at 0:32 of the extra period. The goal was SPEZZA'S second of the game as he picked up an assist on a DENIS HAMEL power-play goal in the first period. Center TOMAS PLEKANEC scored the lone Hamilton goal on the power play at 12:26 of the second period. Both goaltenders were superb with BILLY THOMPSON making 30 saves on 31 shots in his first start on the season. Rookie YANN DANIS made 29 saves on 31 shots. Binghamton finished the game 1 for 6 on the power play while Hamilton was 1 for 5.
SUNDAY OCT. 24th @ BRIDGEPORT (3-2 L): Binghamton could not overcome a slow start and lost 3-2 to the Sound Tigers in Bridgeport, Conn. Bridgeport took 15 first period shots to Binghamton's four and held a 2-0 lead heading to the dressing rooms on goals by center RYAN KRAFT and defenseman CHRIS CAMPOLI. CAMPOLI'S goal was his first as a professional. Binghamton forward ANTOINE VERMETTE scored a power-play goal at 3:38 of the second period, but the B-Sens did not score again in the period despite spending 10 minutes with the man advantage as a result of major penalties assessed to JIM CAMPBELL and ERIC GODARD. Center JUSTIN MAPLETOFT would score late in the period and Binghamton would add a late third period goal by center CHRIS KELLY to make the final score 3-2. RAY EMERY went the distance in net for the B-Sens and made 26 saves on 29 shots. Former B.C. Iceman goalie DIETER KOCHAN picked up the win with 31 saves on 33 shots. The B.C. Iceman were a United Hockey League franchise that played in Binghamton from 1997 to 2002. Binghamton was 1 for 8 on the power play while Bridgeport went 0 for 3.
THIS WEEK: Binghamton hosts two home games this upcoming weekend. The Norfolk Admirals come to town on Friday night for a 7:05 p.m. game and the Manitoba Moose will play in Binghamton the following night at 7:05 p.m. The B-Sens hit the road on Sunday for their third game in three nights when they take on Wilkes-Barre/Scranton at 3:05 p.m.
FRIDAY, OCT. 29th vs. NORFOLK (7:05 p.m.): Mouse pad giveaway sponsored by ICS: Binghamton will play the first of eight games against the Admirals this year on Friday evening. The Admirals knocked the B-Sens out of the playoffs in a three-game qualifying series last April. Norfolk won both games by a 3-0 score in Binghamton. The B-Sens had a record of 3-5-0-0 last season against the Admirals. DENIS HAMEL was Binghamton's leading scorer in the series last season with seven points in eight games (4 + 3 = 7).
SATURDAY, OCT. 30th vs. MANITOBA (7:05 p.m.): Roberts Eyecare presents the Zooperstars/First 1,000 fans ages 12 and under receive a snack bag of Halloween candy: The B-Sens go outside of the East Division for the first of four contests between the Moose and the Senators this season. Binghamton will travel to Winnipeg in December to take on the Moose on consecutive nights (Dec. 4 & Dec. 5). DENIS HAMEL led the B-Sens in scoring against Manitoba last season with three points in four games (1 + 2 = 3). Binghamton dropped both of their home games with the Moose last season and had an overall record of 1-2-1-0 in the 2003-2004 series.
SUNDAY, OCT. 31st @ WILKES-BARRE/SCRANTON (3:05 p.m.): Binghamton travels to Wilkes-Barre for the first of eight contests this season between the East Division rivals. Last season the B-Sens had a record of 1-3-4-0 against the Penguins. The B-Sens lone win last season came on Jan. 31 in Binghamton with CHARLIE STEPHENS scoring the game-winning goal. Binghamton is winless in their last five games against Wilkes-Barre/Scranton.
SENS SNIPPETS: Binghamton currently has a three-game home winning streak.Co-coach JOHN PADDOCK can pick up AHL career coaching victory number 500 as soon as Saturday evening against Manitoba. He currently has 498 victories to his credit.DENIS HAMEL had a three-game goal scoring streak snapped in the B-Sens' 3-2 loss to Bridgeport on Sunday.BRIAN MCGRATTAN leads the AHL in penalty minutes with 67.Binghamton has been out shot in the first period in four consecutive games..JASON SPEZZA'S overtime goal against Hamilton on Oct. 23 was the fastest overtime goal scored by the B-Sens in franchise history. The record had been held by BRAD SMYTH who scored at 0:39 of overtime on Jan. 31, 2003 against Syracuse."The Go Sens Go Show" debuted Sunday morning at 11:30 a.m. on WBNG-TV. The show will appear in the time slot each week through the end of the season.
