Moore's Big Night Powers Columbia to Victory

COLUMBIA, SC - Tyler Moore's bat led the Fireflies Tuesday night and the home team took care of the Braves, 6-2, at Spirit Communications Park. The lefty-swinging catcher croaked his first triple and home run of the season. The Baton Rouge, Louisiana, native had two of the Fireflies' 11 hits.
Moore called a great game behind the plate as well for Columbia (33-32) starter Joe Shaw (W, 4-4). The Texan struck out nine batters in his seven innings of work. Tuesday night was the fourth time Shaw registered the lucky seven frames this year.
The Fireflies sticks rattled Rome (26-38) All-Star Mike Soroka (L, 1-6) in the bottom of the second inning. Milton Ramos started things off by reaching on an infield single. One hitter later, Moore stepped to the plate and ripped a triple to the right-center field crease to score Ramos. Four of the next five hitters got on base. Kevin Kaczmarski, David Thompson and Luis Ortega each produced run-scoring singles to put Columbia on top, 4-0.
With a lead to work with, Shaw shifted into cruise control. The only trouble the right-hander got into was in the sixth inning. After retiring the first two batters, Shaw loaded the bases before Lucas Herbert, Rome's catcher, punched a two-run single to left field. The Fireflies' lead was cut in half, 4-2.
Shaw responded in the seventh with a one-two-three inning. His nine strikeouts were the second most in an outing this season.
Columbia added some insurance runs in the eighth frame. Dash Winningham crushed his third double of the homestand to right-center field. Joe Tuschak extended his hitting streak to five games and used a base knock to plate Winningham Then, Moore found time to launch his first long ball of the year.
Craig Missigman (S, 1) tossed two hitless innings to finish the game and earned his first professional save since 2011 when he pitched for the Gulf Coast League Mets (Rookie).
The series finale between the Fireflies and Braves is Wednesday night at 7:05 p.m. Wednesday's contest at Spirit Communications Park will also be Columbia's last home game of the first half of the season. Righty Chase Ingram (4-5, 4.64) takes the ball for manager Jose Leger. Ingram battles Rome right-handed hurler Patrick Weigel (4-3, 2.77).
