(Lexington, KY)- The West Virginia Power bested the Lexington Legends 7-3 at Whitaker Bank Park on Tuesday evening. The Power built a 5-0 lead for Gage Hinsz and the 20-year old struck out nine en route to his first South Atlantic League victory.
The Legends loaded the bases in the first against Hinsz, but could not plate a run. In the top of the second, Carlos Munoz doubled and scored on a single by Tyler Filliben. West Virginia added a run on a sacrifice fly in the third for a 2-0 edge.
The Power added three runs on one hit in the fourth for a 5-0 lead. Ryan Nagle reached on a wild pitch after a strikeout, Logan Hill was hit by a pitch and Filliben walked to load the bases. Legends starting pitcher Gerson Garabito walked Christian Kelley on four pitches to bring in Nagle. Alfredo Reyes singled to left, driving in Hill. Ramon Collins misplayed the ball, which allowed Filliben to cross as well.
Lexington broke up the shutout in the fourth with a pair of runs off Hinsz and added a solo home run by Xavier Fernandez.
West Virginia scored once in the seventh on a double play and once in the eighth on a wild pitch for a 7-3 advantage.
Hinsz (1-0) pitched six innings for his first quality start of the season, allowing three runs on eight hits while striking out a career-high nine batters. Garabito (0-4) took the loss after allowing five runs over three and a third. Jess Amedee tossed two scoreless innings and Julio Eusebio pitched the ninth in a non-save situation, striking out a pair.
