Charleston RiverDogs News Release
CHARLESTON, SC - The New York Yankees have announced a flurry of moves to the Charleston RiverDogs roster, adding RHPs Sean Carley, Manolo Reyes and Garrett Mundell after RHP Domingo Acevedo and IF Connor Spencer were each called up to High-A Tampa. The Yankees also assigned OF Kendall Coleman, RHP Anyelo Gomez, and RHP David Sosebee to extended spring training with short seasons getting set to begin as early as Friday.
With their modified roster, the RiverDogs can clinch their first playoff berth in 11 seasons with a victory over Augusta with the first pitch set for 7:05 at The Joe on Tuesday night.
Acevedo gets the well-deserved call up after going 3-1 with a 1.90 ERA in eight starts with Charleston. Routinely sitting in the upper-90s with a dominant fastball, the seventh ranked prospect in the Yankees system according to MLB.com struck out 48 batters in 42.2 innings while issuing just seven walks with the RiverDogs. Acevedo was placed on the 7-day disabled list with a lower body injury on June 2, and looked sharp in two starts on June 4 and 10, allowing one unearned run in 9.1 innings to get the promotion to Tampa.
Originally signed as a non-drafted free agent by the Yankees in 2012 out of Villa Los Almacigos, Dominican Republic, the 6'7" righty made one start for Charleston on the road last season before a blister injury would set him back. Acevedo was reassigned to the New York Penn League with Staten Island where he was named a Baseball America Short Season All-Star after posting a 1.69 ERA and 3-0 record in 11 starts with the Baby Bombers while striking out 53 hitters in 48 innings.
Joining Acevedo in Tampa will be Spencer who began the season with Charleston and showed a new found power at the plate to move himself up the minor league ladder. The first baseman out of Trabuco Canyon, CA posted a .253/.343/.411 line with the RiverDogs while slugging the first five home runs of his professional career and driving in 19 runs in 45 games. The lefty slugger was originally the 8th round draft choice in 2014 by the Yankees out of UC-Irvine, and the went on to win a batting title with the Staten Island Yankees, leading the NYPL with a .364 average in 51 games in his pro debut. Spencer was named a mid-season All-Star in each of his first two seasons, including garnering South Atlantic League accolades in 2015 with the RiverDogs.
Promoted from extended spring training, Carley returns for his second season in the Lowcountry after spending majority of the 2015 campaign with the RiverDogs. With Class A Charleston, the 25-year-old right hander accrued a 3-1 record with a 3.86 ERA with 40 Ks across 49 innings across 28 appearances out of the bullpen. Originally a 14th round pick by the Yankees in the 2014 draft out of West Virginia University, the 6'4" hurler out of Morgantown, WV made his debut in the Gulf Coast League in 2014 before a call up to Staten Island.
Getting the call up from extended spring training, Reyes returns to Charleston after making seven appearances in relief in the SALLY League last season. The 26-year-old native of San Pedro de Macoris, Dominican Republic enters his fourth season in the Yankees system after splitting time between three levels last season. In 2015, the 6'1" right hander logged a 4-2 record with a 3.19 ERA in 36.2 innings, spending time with the High-A Tampa, the rookie ball Gulf Coast League Yankees 2, and Charleston. In 12.1 innings of relief with the RiverDogs, Reyes allowed eight runs on 13 hits while walking nine and striking out 13. Signed by the Yankees as a minor league free agent in 2012, Reyes began his career with the Braves in the Dominican Summer League in 2009 where he made six appearances, allowing 15 runs (11 earned) in 9.2 innings before his release. Reyes did not appear in a minor league game from the 2010-12 seasons.
Mundell will also reinforce the ranks of the accomplished Charleston pitching staff, coming off a dominant rookie season when he did not allow a run in 26 innings split between rookie ball Pulaski and Charleston last year. The Fresno State product out of Lake Forest, CA was drafted in the 23rd round by the Yankees in last summer's draft, and went untouched through his first 18 bullpen appearances as a pro. The 6'6" righty began the season with the Pulaski Yankees where he struck out 25 batters in 19 innings while holding opponents to a .152 average before making his Single-A debut with the RiverDogs to end his rookie campaign. With the RiverDogs, Mundell racked up 10 K's in seven frames. Across his 26 innings on the season, Mundell allowed just two extra base hits (both doubles) and 21 total baserunners (14 hits, 7 walks).
