LEADING OFF: West Virginia beat Lexington 5-3 on Monday evening. The Power plated three runs off Scott Blewett in the second inning. Tyler Filliben singled in Ryan Nagle to open the scoring and Tito Polo doubled in a pair for a 3-0 lead. The Legends scored once again spot starter Tanner Anderson in the fifth inning on a single and two errors. Lexington tied the game in the eighth on a sac fly and a solo home run. In the top of the ninth. Filliben doubled with two down and moved to third on a wild pitch. After Polo walked and stole second, Mitchell Tolman reached on an infield single to drive in a two for the 5-3 advantage. Seth McGarry vultured the win and Daniel Zamora pitched a perfect ninth for his first save. Nik Stephenson took the loss for Lexington.
GREAT SPOT: Tanner Anderson notched a quality start in his first-ever non-relief appearance. Anderson had made 30 appearances spanning two seasons out of the bullpen prior to Monday's spot start. He did not factor in the decision, but was effective, allowing one unearned run over six innings on three hits while striking out five.
LEGENDS IN THE MAKING: The Power are 8-1 this season against the Legends, having won seven straight before an April 24 loss at Lexington. West Virginia leads the all-time series 122-100 and have gone 66-48 at Whitaker Bank Park. After this series, the Power and Legends meet for nine games in the second half of the season.
PACE SETTER: Mitchell Tolman's on-base streak has reached 21 straight. The infielder's streak is the longest active on-base streak in the league, two better than teammate John Bormann's current 19-game run. Tolman was last kept off the bases on May 18 at Delmarva.
BOUNCING BACK: Gage Hinsz will make his third start of the season. The right-hander has not pitched at home yet this season. After five shutout innings in his SAL debut on June 3, Hinsz surrendered five runs on six hits at Columbia last Thursday. The Fireflies scored three in the first before Hinsz settled in and retired 14 straight. Columbia added a pair in the sixth to knock the 2014 11th rounder from the game.
FLYING HIGH: Tito Polo hit his league-best 11th home run of the season on Sunday. Polo's is one behind the 2015 Power home run leaders. Jordan Luplow and Pablo Reyes led the 2015 club with 12 home runs over 106 and 108 games apiece, respectively. Polo hit 10 home runs prior to this season over 246 career games.
SOUTHERN HOSPITALITY: West Virginia is 18-17 against Southern Division opponents this season. The Power will finish the first half with seven in a row against Southern Division opponents and open the second half with 11 straight against teams from the South. The next time West Virginia plays a divisional rival is on July 4 at Greensboro.
STRUGGLE BUS: The Power are 14-18 away from Appalachian Power Park. The club boasts a .265 average at home with season with 157 runs scored over 31 home games, averaging 5.1 runs per game. On the road, the Power are batting .221 with 103 runs in 32 games, an average of 3.2 runs per game. The staff earned run average is slightly higher on the road. West Virginia holds a 3.56 ERA at home and has a 3.75 ERA on the road.
POWER POINTS: Mitch Keller and Tito Polo were selected as starters for the June 21 All-Star Game in Lexington. Ke'Bryan Hayes was chosen as a reserve and trainer Dom Cappozzo will also represent the Power at Whitaker Bank Park... Tanner Anderson threw 62 pitches over six innings in his spot start Monday...
AROUND THE ORGANIZATION: Pittsburgh was off Monday and opens a series against the Mets in New York tonight... Indianapolis was off and plays Pawtucket tonight.. Altoona was idle and hosts New Hampshire tonight... Bradenton fell 3-1 at Clearwater.
PROMO UPDATE: The Power host the Charleston RiverDogs on June 16. FestivALL, the 12 day celebration of arts in the city, will hold their opening ceremonies at Appalachian Power Park. The evening is also Garnet Career Center Night and will be followed by a post game concert from Tyler Childers and Ona.
